Its account allows that Meleys might have stood a chance against Vhagar alone. At Rook’s Rest, however, she faced both Vhagar and Sunfyre, so her death there does not settle the one-on-one hypothetical.
What does Fire & Blood say about Meleys’s chances?
The Rook’s Rest account says, “Meleys might have stood a chance against the older Vhagar alone.” The key word is might: it leaves victory possible, not certain. The passage does not give odds or declare a winner.
The wording varies by publication. An earlier version in the novella The Princess and the Queen describes Meleys as “old and cunning, and no stranger to battle.” The later Fire & Blood wording omits that clause but retains the qualified possibility that she could have challenged Vhagar alone. The Ringer compares the two versions: The Ringer’s comparison.
Why doesn’t the Battle of Rook’s Rest answer the question?
Rook’s Rest was not a duel. Aegon and Sunfyre joined Aemond and Vhagar against Rhaenys and Meleys. In the fight, Meleys seized Sunfyre by the neck and tore away half of one of his wings. Vhagar then fell on them; all three dragons crashed. Meleys died, Sunfyre was badly injured, and Vhagar emerged unharmed.

That result establishes what happened in a two-against-one battle, not what would have happened if Meleys had faced Vhagar by herself. The reference account also attributes about 800 men killed by Meleys’s dragonfire to the battle—a fictional in-world figure, not a real-world statistic or evidence of her chances against Vhagar. See the Rook’s Rest account and the battle reference entry.

House of the Dragon presents its own version of the encounter. TIME’s recap describes Meleys gaining the upper hand on Sunfyre before Vhagar arrives, after which Rhaenys turns back into the fight and Meleys is killed. That screen sequence is a distinct depiction; it does not resolve the book’s hypothetical about a one-on-one fight. TIME’s recap.
