There is no universal cheaper option: a home NAS can make sense when you already own suitable hardware, have reliable upload capacity and can spread the purchase over a long period. A cloud VPS avoids buying a server but brings recurring compute, storage and data-transfer charges. Compare both over the same period and include power, backups, bandwidth and your time—not just the NAS purchase price and the VPS headline fee.
This comparison is for looping prerecorded videos as a continuous YouTube Live broadcast. Simply playing an existing YouTube playlist does not necessarily require a NAS-hosted or VPS-hosted encoder.
What the two setups do
In a home-NAS setup, the NAS stores the video files and runs the software that sends a continuous live stream to YouTube. Your home power, internet connection and upload capacity become part of the service.
With a cloud VPS, a virtual server stores or accesses the files and runs the streaming software from a hosting provider’s infrastructure. You avoid maintaining a physical server at home, but you remain responsible for configuration and administration, and must check the provider’s storage, traffic and billing terms.

Neither choice is automatically more reliable or less expensive. The result depends on the equipment and usable storage you need, stream profile, broadcast hours, local electricity and internet costs, VPS region and plan, included transfer, backup expectations, and comparison period.
Compare total cost over the same period
Choose a period of N months and price the resources needed to deliver the same stream for the same hours, with equivalent usable storage and backup expectations. A NAS purchase is an upfront cost; a VPS instance is generally billed while provisioned. Comparing the NAS purchase with only one month of VPS rent, or comparing one month of NAS electricity with a year of VPS charges, will distort the result.

| Cost or constraint | Home NAS | Cloud VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Compute and equipment | Enclosure and disks, including any hardware needed to run the streaming software. | Instance charges for the time provisioned; check whether the selected capacity can sustain the workload. |
| Storage | Disk capacity after the chosen layout; account for the difference between raw and usable space. | Persistent storage charges, if not included in the instance price. |
| Electricity | Measured power use multiplied by operating hours and your local electricity rate. | Usually reflected in provider charges rather than your home electricity bill. |
| Network delivery | Home upload capacity and any relevant internet-plan or data-cap cost. | Included outbound traffic, transfer overages and any separately billed network charges. |
| Backup and resilience | Offsite backup and recovery costs. Drive redundancy alone is not an offsite backup. | Snapshots or separate backup storage, subject to provider charges and terms. |
| Maintenance and interruption risk | Setup, updates, drive replacement, and exposure to home power or internet outages. | Operating-system and service updates, provider or account dependence, billing limits and traffic caps. |
Calculate the NAS total
For your chosen N-month period, use:
NAS total = enclosure + disks + expected replacements + (measured watts Ă— operating hours Ă— local electricity rate) + backup + incremental network cost + maintenance allowance
Use the device’s measured power draw if available rather than assuming its rated maximum is its typical consumption. Include the cost of replacement drives over the period only if your estimate supports it; do not treat drive redundancy as protection against every failure or loss scenario.

Calculate the VPS total
For the same period, use:
VPS total = N Ă— instance charge + storage + transfer or overage + backups or snapshots + separately billed encoder or management service
Check the provider’s current terms for whether storage and traffic are included, what counts as outbound transfer, how overages are charged, and whether a stopped instance still incurs storage or other fees. Those terms vary by provider and plan, so an instance’s advertised fee alone is not a complete cost.

Estimate traffic from the stream profile
For a continuous stream, estimate outbound traffic using the actual video bitrate and expected broadcast uptime, then compare it with the NAS connection’s practical capacity or the VPS plan’s included transfer and overage rules. As a rough decimal-unit calculation, a constant bitrate of 1 Mbps sends about 10.8 GB in 24 hours (1 Mbps × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte). Multiply by the chosen bitrate in Mbps and the number of broadcast days; add any audio bitrate if it is not already included. Actual usage can differ with the stream profile and uptime.
Keep units consistent: decimal GB uses 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, while GiB uses 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Providers may report or bill traffic differently. Confirm the unit and billing window before comparing your estimate with a plan allowance.

Check that the network can sustain the stream
YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into output formats for viewers, but the source stream still has to reach YouTube reliably. Its official encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance gives H.264 recommended encoder bitrates of 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular NAS connection or VPS plan will work.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and warn that network disruption can break a stream. For a NAS, test sustained home upload capacity—not just download speed—and account for other household traffic. A VPS shifts the network path and traffic allowance to the host, but you still need enough capacity and continuity from that provider.
- Match your encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to the profile you intend to use.
- Test the stream profile and monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming a successful initial connection proves continuous stability.
- Check for upload caps, traffic limits, overage fees and service conditions that apply to your internet or hosting plan.
- Allow for interruptions: a home power or internet outage can stop a NAS stream; a VPS does not remove configuration, provider or billing risks.
When each option may fit
A home NAS may fit when
- You already own a NAS with enough usable space and capacity to run the streaming workload.
- Your home upload connection is stable, has adequate headroom and does not make continuous traffic unexpectedly expensive.
- You are comfortable handling setup, updates, drive failures, backups and recovery.
- You value local control over the files and hardware and have a realistic plan for offsite backup.
A cloud VPS may fit when
- You prefer not to buy and power physical server hardware at home.
- A suitable plan has enough compute, persistent storage and included outbound traffic for your actual stream profile.
- You can manage the server and accept its provider, account, billing and traffic limits.
- The provider’s backup and recovery options meet your needs at a cost you have included in the comparison.
How to find your break-even point
- Set the comparison period. Use the same number of months for both options, and state whether setup time or hardware resale value is included.
- Define the workload. Record usable storage, video bitrate, resolution, frame rate and expected broadcast hours.
- Price complete resource lists. Include NAS enclosure and disks, or VPS compute and storage; add power, transfer, backups, replacements and any incremental network charges.
- Value maintenance consistently. If total cost of ownership matters, include setup and ongoing administration time for both choices.
- Compare continuity and recovery. Set a comparable expectation for backups and interruptions; do not assume mirrored disks or a VPS snapshot alone solves every recovery need.
- Calculate only from those inputs. The point at which cumulative costs cross is specific to your equipment, location, stream and chosen period—not a general NAS-versus-VPS rule.
A 2026 SeedboxCompare result reports a 46-month break-even in its own 8 TB rented-media-box comparison with electricity included. That is a different scenario, not a general result for streaming a YouTube Live loop, so it should not be used as your break-even estimate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous prerecorded YouTube Live loop rather than managing a server, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs on YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
