Coolie is worth considering for Rajinikanth’s screen presence and its high-energy, nostalgic appeal, but its crowded action spectacle may not satisfy viewers looking for a tightly focused story. The “overloaded and tacky” verdict is an interpretation of how the film’s many elements compete, not an objective description shared by every critic.
What is Coolie about?
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie is a 2025 Tamil-language film starring Rajinikanth, with Nagarjuna, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir and Shruti Haasan among its principal cast. Rotten Tomatoes describes Deva as a former gold smuggler who tries to revive his old gang using stolen technology hidden in vintage golden watches, with unintended consequences. That is the aggregator’s synopsis, rather than a verified quotation from official marketing.
The premise gives the film room for crime, technology, nostalgia and large-scale action. The central question is whether those ingredients build a coherent drama or compete for attention. The criticism of the screenplay in The Indian Express supports the latter reading; the more favorable Times of India review sees energy and Rajinikanth tribute as part of the appeal.
Why can the film feel overloaded?
“Overloaded” describes an effect: when a film piles on plot turns, action, tonal shifts and star power, those elements can crowd out the connective tissue that makes a story easy to follow. In its release-day review, The Indian Express argues that Rajinikanth elevates a frustrating action vehicle and criticizes the screenplay, including in comparison with Kanagaraj’s earlier work. That points to a gap between the scale of the star vehicle and the strength of its storytelling.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The runtime is substantial: the British Board of Film Classification lists 168 minutes and 6 seconds, while Rotten Tomatoes rounds it to 2 hours 50 minutes. Those figures may reflect rounding or source/version differences. A long runtime can make pacing issues more noticeable, but duration alone does not establish that a film is overlong.
Why some viewers may enjoy the spectacle
The positive case is not simply that the film is big. The Times of India describes it as an energetic, nostalgic Rajinikanth tribute and praises its second half and use of its pan-India cast. For viewers who want a star-led action film with heightened energy and familiar Rajinikanth appeal, that kind of momentum may matter more than economical plotting.

Rajinikanth is the strongest point of agreement across the contrasting reviews: even the critical Indian Express response recognizes that his presence lifts the material. The trade-off is that a magnetic star can carry scenes without resolving weaknesses in how the larger story fits together.

What the ratings can—and cannot—tell you
When accessed on 3 October 2026, Rotten Tomatoes showed 8 critic reviews and a 56% Tomatometer, alongside 250+ verified audience ratings. These are a dated, changeable platform snapshot, not a definitive audience consensus or a substitute for considering what kind of film you want to watch. The split in the cited reviews is more revealing: one emphasizes screenplay frustration, the other nostalgia, energy and the second half.

- Try it if Rajinikanth’s screen presence, nostalgic star vehicles and energetic action are your main draw.
- Temper expectations if you want a tightly controlled screenplay or an ensemble in which every character is deeply developed.
- Consider the commitment if pacing is a deciding factor: the BBFC lists a runtime of 168 minutes and 6 seconds.
Verdict: Coolie has a credible appeal as a high-volume Rajinikanth spectacle, but its story may feel less coherent than its scale promises. The “overloaded and tacky” reading is most persuasive for viewers who value screenplay discipline over star-driven energy; those drawn to nostalgia and momentum may come away more satisfied.
