Contabo snapshots and Auto Backup can help you recover a VPS, but neither keeps a YouTube stream live while the server is down. Treat snapshots as short-lived rollback points, Auto Backup as a short-retention off-server copy on eligible plans, and an independently stored copy of essential files as a separate recovery layer. A restore overwrites the VPS and takes it offline until complete, so rehearse recovery before relying on it during a critical broadcast.
What each Contabo recovery option does
Snapshots: rollback points, not backups
Contabo describes a snapshot as a saved state of a VPS system for rolling back after a change. It is not a substitute for a separate backup: snapshots expire after 30 days, cannot be downloaded, and the number of available slots depends on plan. Contabo manages snapshots through the Customer Control Panel, and they use storage separate from the VPS disk. Check the panel for the expiration date and the slots available to your plan. Auto Backup: daily off-server VPS copies
Auto Backup is an add-on for Core VPS and Performance VPS. The initial copy is full; later copies are incremental and scheduled daily, with at least eight hours between runs. Contabo retains up to 10 backups, each for a maximum of 10 days, deleting the oldest when the limit is reached. You cannot choose the run time within Contabo’s standard window or select the backup location. Copies are stored in a Contabo data center separate from the VPS host, but this is not a customer-selected region or a copy held outside Contabo. Contabo VPS Auto Backup documentation
Independent copies: another recovery route
Keep irreplaceable video assets and the configuration needed to rebuild the streaming service somewhere independent of the VPS. Protect the stream key and other credentials; do not put secrets in public notes or an unprotected archive. This matters because Auto Backup is short-retention and restores the entire VPS rather than individual files.

These feature counts come from Contabo’s current VPS documentation and can change; confirm them for the plan you are deploying. Contabo describes Storage VPS as using SSD rather than NVMe and recommends Cloud VPS with NVMe where extreme I/O throughput matters. What happens when you restore a backup?
- The current VPS data is overwritten. Preserve any needed current files separately before starting a restore.
- The VPS is unavailable while the restore runs. The stream cannot rely on that VPS to maintain its ingest connection during the restore.
- The restore covers the whole VPS. Contabo does not offer individual-file restoration through Auto Backup.
- Recovery is not guaranteed. Contabo says it ensures backup performance and accessibility but does not guarantee recoverability or perform recovery for the customer. Verify that backups complete and rehearse the steps you would use.
Use the Customer Control Panel to manage the feature and restore to the original VPS. Because the server is unavailable during the operation, schedule a rehearsal during a maintenance window or test on a separate instance rather than discovering the process during a critical live period. A practical backup and recovery workflow
- Before installing or changing the streaming stack, create a named snapshot if the plan supports it. Use it as a convenient rollback point, not as your only copy: it expires and cannot be downloaded.
- Enable Auto Backup if appropriate. On an eligible Core or Performance VPS, enable it at deployment or later, then confirm in the Control Panel that a backup has completed.
- Store critical files independently. Keep separate copies of source videos and the configuration required to rebuild the service. Store stream keys and credentials securely.
- Rehearse restoration or rebuilding. Use a maintenance window or separate test instance; a production restore overwrites current data and interrupts VPS availability.
- Test the actual stream workload. Run a test at the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Monitor YouTube stream health, VPS resource use, and sustained outbound throughput before treating the configuration as suitable for continuous streaming.
Backups do not prove the VPS can stream continuously
A backup protects data and configuration; it does not keep an ingest connection alive through VPS failure or a restore. Stream capacity is a separate question. Choose the intended video quality, codec, bitrate, and encoding method, then test whether the actual VPS can encode the material and sustain the required outbound throughput. The available documentation does not establish a best Contabo plan for a workload without those details and measurements.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest, testing before starting, and monitoring stream health. Its published H.264 bitrate recommendations include the following ranges; these are encoder guidance, not guarantees about a Contabo VPS port or network route.
