What Contabo’s published plans tell you
Contabo’s US pricing page lists Core VPS plans from Cloud VPS 4 through Cloud VPS 18. Across that range, it advertises 4–18 vCPU cores, 8–96 GB of RAM, 100–600 GB of SSD storage, and port speeds from 200 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s. The displayed prices are monthly rates for a 24-month term. The core count needs context: Contabo describes VPS vCPU cores as shared, while RAM is fixed. A listed vCPU count is not a promise of dedicated processor capacity, and it does not establish that a software encoder can sustain a particular resolution continuously. Contabo VPS documentation
Will a Contabo VPS handle your stream?
It depends on whether the VPS is sending a prepared video or encoding it in real time, the chosen resolution and frame rate, and the actual sustained performance of the virtual machine and network. The cited provider and YouTube specifications do not demonstrate a specific Contabo plan reliably encoding a specific workload 24/7. A port-speed figure is an advertised capacity, not a measured guarantee of continuous throughput.

Sending an already encoded stream
If your workflow sends an already encoded file or stream, CPU demand may be lower than for live software encoding, but you still need to configure the sending software, keep the process supervised, and verify the VPS can sustain outbound delivery. Do not assume that a large port figure eliminates network variability or the need to monitor stream health.
Encoding on the VPS
Real-time encoding adds CPU demand. Because VPS vCPUs are shared, the plan’s advertised core count alone cannot tell you whether a selected encoder, resolution, and frame rate will remain stable under sustained load. Test the exact workload for an extended period before relying on it for a channel schedule.

Bandwidth: compare bitrate, but read the fair-use terms
Contabo says its VPS products have no default bandwidth limit, but its fair-use policy requires traffic to fit typical server workloads and allows throttling for exceptionally high or disruptive usage. Contabo says it will notify customers if usage exceeds the policy and work with them on a solution. “Unlimited traffic” therefore should not be read as an unconditional promise of unlimited sustained outbound throughput. YouTube’s current recommended settings provide a useful comparison point: H.264 at 1080p/30 fps is listed at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; H.264 at 720p/30 fps is listed at 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. Those bitrates are below the advertised port speeds on the listed US plans, but a port-speed comparison alone cannot establish sustained performance. Configure YouTube and test the whole chain
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate appropriate to your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than choosing a number based only on the VPS port. Test and monitor stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room. - Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s basic live-stream prerequisites include a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Confirm eligibility before configuring the VPS. YouTube live-streaming requirements
- Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and obtain its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. Enter it only in the encoder or streaming process you control.
- Set the encoder. Choose RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and a bitrate YouTube recommends for your selected codec and video mode. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and your intended stream.
- Preview before going public. Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate, check the Live Control Room preview, and inspect audio, video, and stream-health indicators. YouTube advises testing the encoder and monitoring quality rather than assuming a successful connection means a healthy broadcast. YouTube live-streaming operational guidance
- Run a sustained VPS test. Observe CPU use, memory, outbound traffic, and stream health over an extended period that reflects your actual content and settings. Check for dropped frames, interruptions, and process restarts. A short successful test cannot establish continuous reliability.
- Plan supervision and recovery. Arrange a way to detect a stopped process or dropped YouTube connection and restart or alert on it. A VPS by itself does not guarantee continuity; the streaming process, network path, and platform connection can all fail.
24/7 live does not mean a complete YouTube archive
YouTube says a live stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. A channel that stays live continuously and a complete replay are separate outcomes: if preserving the full program matters, plan for recording and for restarting or segmenting streams rather than relying on one uninterrupted broadcast. Copyright, reused content, and channel risk
A VPS changes where the stream runs; it does not grant rights to the video or music being broadcast, and it does not exempt a channel from YouTube’s policies. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and check how rights apply to music, footage, and other material in your planned program. Repeatedly looping material does not itself establish that you have permission or that a channel will meet YouTube’s monetization policies. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and channel monetization policies before scheduling a continuous feed.
Costs and trade-offs
Contabo’s listed monthly rates are tied to a 24-month term, so compare the full commitment and current plan terms—not just a monthly figure—with the time and work needed to configure and supervise the VPS. The practical decision also depends on whether you need compute for encoding, how much storage your workflow needs, and what monitoring and recovery you will operate. The published plan specifications do not establish a best plan for every stream.
