Short answer: Contabo’s current Help Center says its servers have no default bandwidth limit, but fair-use rules apply and the provider reserves the right to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive traffic. That is not a guarantee that every VPS can stream to YouTube continuously without restriction. Check the exact plan’s port speed and applicable traffic terms, estimate your monthly transfer, and test the actual route before relying on it for a 24/7 stream. Policy wording checked against Contabo’s published pages in 2026.
What Contabo’s bandwidth policy says
Contabo’s Help Center states that there is “no default bandwidth limit” for its VPS, VDS and dedicated server products, while also saying its fair-use policy applies. It reserves discretion to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive usage. In practice, “unlimited” should not be read as an unconditional promise that any volume or pattern of traffic will always run at full speed.
Contabo’s product documentation lists port speeds for its VPS plans, shown across the documented plans as ranging from 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps, and presents traffic as unlimited with a fair-use qualification. The exact speed and terms depend on the product and applicable plan details. Check the current product documentation and the terms attached to your order rather than assuming all locations or VPS plans have the same specifications: Contabo VPS product documentation and Contabo Help Center: bandwidth or traffic limits.
Port speed, stream bitrate and monthly traffic are different
Port speed is the network link’s stated capacity
A plan’s port speed is a stated network rate, not a promise of uninterrupted end-to-end throughput from that VPS to YouTube. Routing, congestion, packet loss, shared resources and provider policy can all affect the path. A 200 Mbps or faster port is numerically above the example YouTube bitrates below, but that comparison alone cannot establish stream stability.

Bitrate is the stream’s data rate while it runs
YouTube’s recommended encoder settings depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 frames per second, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 50 Mbps for 4K (2160p) at 60 fps. These are recommended stream bitrates, not measurements of a Contabo-to-YouTube connection. Monthly traffic accumulates over time
Mbps describes the rate at a moment; traffic volume is the total transferred over hours and days. A continuous stream can use a modest share of a port’s capacity while accumulating substantial monthly outgoing data.

These are arithmetic estimates using decimal units and a constant bitrate: bitrate in Mbps × seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000. They are not Contabo or YouTube usage measurements. Protocol overhead, audio, reconnects, other server traffic and variations in the actual stream can change metered totals.
Does Contabo allow a 24/7 YouTube stream?
The official pages cited here do not provide a specific authorization for continuous YouTube streaming, a guaranteed Contabo-to-YouTube throughput, or an uptime guarantee for that workload. The published no-default-limit wording and plan port speeds are useful, but they do not settle whether a particular continuous workload will remain unaffected by fair-use enforcement. For a business-critical channel, ask Contabo to confirm the terms for your exact product and order before committing.

Keep the direction of traffic clear when estimating use. If the VPS sends an encoded stream to YouTube, that outgoing stream is the relevant VPS traffic. If the VPS also serves video directly to viewers, that is a separate workload and can add substantial outgoing traffic. If the VPS encodes video, CPU capacity and encoder load are additional constraints; network bandwidth alone does not determine whether encoding will keep up.
How to assess a VPS plan before streaming
- Check the exact plan and region. Record the advertised port speed and read the current traffic and fair-use wording for the product you are buying. Do not transfer a specification from a different plan or location.
- Choose the intended YouTube settings. Use YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution and frame rate. The H.264 examples above are reference points, not mandatory settings for every stream.
- Estimate the hours and traffic. Multiply the intended bitrate by planned streaming time using the formula above. Include other outgoing server traffic, and allow for the fact that actual metering may differ from the estimate.
- Test the real route and configuration. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. Run a preflight stream from the VPS to the intended YouTube event, using the intended encoder settings, then check YouTube’s stream health. A speed test or successful short test is evidence about that test, not proof of 24/7 reliability.
- Monitor the stream after launch. Watch YouTube stream health and the VPS for bitrate drops, packet loss, CPU saturation or reconnects. Keep a recovery plan and confirm how you will respond if the stream stops or provider policy becomes an issue.

How to read Contabo’s older traffic schedule
A Contabo Web post dated September 4, 2024 and last updated April 10, 2025 described plan traffic tiers of 10 TB, 32 TB, 81 TB, 162 TB, 243 TB and 324 TB, and said port speed could be reduced after usage above the applicable package persisted for ten consecutive days. That is dated context, not a universal current rule for every VPS. Contabo’s current Help Center describes no default bandwidth limit and discretionary fair-use throttling without repeating that schedule. The older post may describe a previous or product-specific set of terms; the current order terms and a confirmation from Contabo support are the relevant references for an individual account: Contabo Web: Rules for Traffic With Contabo.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube reports an unstable stream: Check the actual upload path, packet loss and configured bitrate. Compare the measured upload rate with the total stream bitrate, then lower the bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain it reliably.
- The stream rate fits under the advertised port speed, but drops still occur: Port speed is not guaranteed end-to-end throughput. Check route quality, congestion, shared-resource effects, packet loss and server load; contact Contabo with timestamps and measurements if the issue persists.
- The stream works briefly but there is concern about monthly traffic: Recalculate from bitrate and actual hours streamed, add other outgoing workloads, and ask Contabo which traffic terms apply to the plan. Do not assume the older ten-day schedule is the current rule for your product.
- The VPS cannot encode at the intended settings: Check CPU use and encoder performance separately from network capacity. A faster port does not provide more CPU resources.
- The stream disconnects and does not resume: Check the encoder or relay’s reconnect behavior, YouTube stream health and server logs. A working short test does not establish that recovery will be automatic or that the stream will remain online indefinitely.
