What McGregor announced
On December 17, 2024, McGregor posted on X that reports of a fight with Ilia Topuria were false and that he was in “preliminary agreements” with the Ambani family to face Logan Paul in a boxing exhibition in India. He added: “I have agreed. I will then seek my return to the Octagon.” The statement was McGregor’s own announcement, reported by The Associated Press and ESPN.
The wording matters: “preliminary agreements” describes a proposal at an early stage, not a signed, finalized fight contract. The announcement did not itself establish a date, venue, rules, broadcaster, ticket release, or agreement among all the parties. A contemporaneous Sporting News explainer said there was no confirmation from Paul or the Ambani family at that point; that is a historical account, not evidence of their current positions.
What happened after the announcement
On January 24, 2025, ESPN reported that McGregor said the UFC would not grant him permission for the proposed exhibition. McGregor said he still intended to pursue a boxing event. ESPN also reported that Paul had said he would focus on professional wrestling. In an interview with MMA personality The Schmo, McGregor described the prospective bout as a “glorified spar”; that was his characterization of the proposed exhibition, not an established set of fight rules. Is the fight confirmed or scheduled now?
The reporting cited here does not establish that the India proposal was finalized, canceled, revived, or rescheduled after ESPN’s January 2025 update. It also does not establish a current date, venue, tickets, broadcast, or rules. So the accurate answer is that McGregor announced a proposed exhibition, but these sources do not confirm a scheduled McGregor–Paul fight. The absence of a later update in these reports is not proof that the proposal was canceled.
Background on the proposed matchup
McGregor had previously boxed Floyd Mayweather in a professional bout in 2017, according to AP. He was also coming back from a leg injury suffered in a July 2021 bout with Dustin Poirier and withdrew from a scheduled UFC 303 contest with Michael Chandler in 2024, as ESPN reported. Those facts provide career context, but they do not show that the proposed India exhibition was likely to happen.
