How Connections works

Connections is a New York Times word game built around a 16-word grid. The goal is to sort the words into four groups of four that share a theme. The groups are marked yellow, green, blue, and purple; the game’s colors generally progress from easier to harder. Players have four incorrect guesses before the game ends. The cited guide says the game resets at midnight each night.

Solving notes

Katie Teague’s December 15, 2025 Yahoo Tech guide says she solved the groups in yellow, green, purple, then blue order. For the Enormous group, she initially tried monster, titanic, hole, and giant. The game’s “one away” feedback prompted her to reconsider the selection and replace hole with bumper.

That kind of feedback can help locate a mismatch: if a set is one away, check whether one selected word has a stronger fit with another theme. Shuffling the grid can also make different word relationships easier to notice. These are the guide author’s suggestions, not independently tested strategies.
