Thomas and Ruth met through Ruth’s family. Two of Thomas’s classmates at the College of the Holy Cross were her brothers. They married in 1958 and lived in Brookline from 1963 onward.
Thomas O’Brien was an infectious-disease physician and researcher
Thomas O’Brien was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on January 28, 1929, and grew up in Millbury and Southbridge. He graduated from Holy Cross in 1950 with a degree in classics before earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1954.
His subsequent training included a residency at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, an immunology fellowship at Cambridge University, service as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and research at Harvard Medical School. He later spent roughly three decades directing the Division of Infectious Diseases and the microbiology laboratory at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, now Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also served as an associate professor at Harvard Medical School.
The Boston Globe’s obituary coverage highlighted O’Brien’s early warnings about antimicrobial resistance. The Globe also reported that he helped develop an early device designed to allow repeated hemodialysis through the same vein site. In addition, the newspaper reported that the WHONET antimicrobial-resistance research operation he cofounded was being used by more than 3,000 laboratories in more than 130 countries at the time of the obituary.

Those details describe his professional legacy as reported by the Globe. They also help explain the breadth of a career that combined clinical medicine, laboratory science, research, and international public-health work.
Ruth Reardon O’Brien built a pioneering legal career
Ruth O’Brien was born and raised in Worcester. She graduated from South High School in 1949, Vassar College in 1953, and Yale Law School in 1956. She was one of only four women in her Yale Law School class and served as vice president of student government.
After law school, she clerked for Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Raymond Wilkins from 1956 to 1957. She then worked as a real-estate attorney at Ropes & Gray in Boston from 1957 to 1958. After taking time away from legal practice while raising the couple’s children, she returned to the firm part-time and later resumed full-time work.
Ruth became Ropes & Gray’s second woman partner in 1978 and remained at the firm until 1996. The firm’s career-reentry materials later identified her as an example of a professional relaunch after a family-related career break.

Her career was demanding in its own right, but it existed alongside the daily work of raising six children. Conan O’Brien recalled accompanying his mother to the law office and described her as highly organized, practical, and attentive to the family’s needs.
Conan O’Brien remembered his parents as complementary personalities
In interviews conducted for the Globe’s obituary coverage, Conan described his parents as kindred spirits whose personalities differed but fit together. He portrayed his father as an energetic dreamer: intensely curious, restless, interested in people and ideas, and eager to travel. He described his mother as the practical and organized counterpart who brought structure and generosity to family life.
Conan also credited his father with shaping his sense of humor. Thomas introduced his children to performers including Jack Benny, Charlie Chaplin, the Marx Brothers, and Peter Sellers. Conan remembered his father’s laugh as especially distinctive and said that his father helped inspire his own desire to travel.
Their shared qualities, Conan said, included discipline, excellence, humor, generosity, and service to others. He also described them as hard-working Irish Catholics from central Massachusetts.

His parents were a recurring part of Conan’s comedy
O’Brien often drew on his upbringing and family relationships for jokes and sketches. Coverage by the Los Angeles Times noted that his parents inspired material about his professional-class family, his father’s personality, and his mother’s reactions.
That public comedy was only one part of the relationship. In the later Globe feature, Conan’s memories offered a more personal picture: Thomas as an adventurous intellectual and Ruth as a grounded, capable organizer, with both parents united by strong standards and a commitment to other people.
