- Custom RTMP output: the cloud service plays your uploaded files, but sends the resulting live stream to an RTMP destination you specify rather than only to a built-in platform connection.
- Managed RTMP ingest: OBS or another external encoder sends a live feed to the service’s RTMP server, which then distributes the received feed. This is not the same as uploading prerecorded files for the service to play.
Choose the workflow that matches your actual need. If you only want a playlist of finished documentaries to run on YouTube, a cloud playout service is the simpler fit. If a separate encoder is already producing a live feed, or a downstream system specifically requires an RTMP destination, check the provider’s RTMP input or output support explicitly.

Choose Castr when custom RTMP is a requirement
Castr documents two relevant but distinct capabilities: prerecorded streams can be sent to custom RTMP destinations, and its separate RTMP server can receive an external encoder feed such as one from OBS, vMix, or Wirecast. Check limits and YouTube responsibilities before committing
Plan comparisons can be misleading if they omit file duration, storage, playlist size, concurrent streams, or loop-mode restrictions. Castr says these limits vary by plan, and its continuous 24/7 mode starts at Premium. Verify the live plan matrix and pricing with each provider before purchase; like-for-like current pricing and complete limits for all services are not established here.
- Confirm what is uploaded and what is encoded. For cloud playout, the provider handles the outgoing stream from your files. For managed RTMP ingest, your external encoder sends the feed using the service’s RTMP server URL and stream key.
- Check content rights. Having a file does not by itself establish permission to broadcast its music, footage, narration, or other included material. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for a continuous public live stream.
- Do not assume monetization or reach. A provider’s ability to loop video does not guarantee YouTube monetization eligibility, recommendations, audience growth, or watch time. The services’ feature descriptions are not evidence of those outcomes.
- Review recovery and support terms. Ask what happens if YouTube disconnects the stream, whether restart behavior is automatic, and what monitoring or support is included. Do not infer uptime from feature marketing.
