Moving a video workflow to the cloud does not mean moving every file, task, and piece of equipment at once. Teams can start with archive, use proxies for remote editing, run editing workstations in the cloud, or combine cloud and on-premises systems. The right design depends on the media, the people and locations involved, and how often footage must be accessed.
What “moving to the cloud” can mean
Cloud video workflows are a set of choices, not a single architecture. A cloud archive stores media remotely; proxy workflows let editors work with lighter versions of footage; cloud workstations run editing applications on remote computers; and cloud-connected production links some production tasks to cloud services. A hybrid workflow keeps selected processing or storage local.
AWS describes archive as a possible first step toward more remote workflows, with proxy editing as a further option—not as a mandatory sequence for every team. These are vendor recommendations, not a universal migration plan. AWS media workflow guidance
Myth: Everything has to move at once
A transition can be staged. A team might begin by archiving completed projects in the cloud while continuing to edit current work locally. Later, it could test remote proxy editing or cloud workstations for selected productions. Retaining local systems during that process is a valid choice, not evidence that the transition has failed.

Define the scope of each stage: which media is stored remotely, which users need access, what must remain local, and how files will be retrieved when required. AWS presents archive as a foundation that can support further remote workflows, rather than a requirement to move all production activity immediately. AWS media workflow guidance
Myth: Every editor needs the full-resolution originals in the cloud
Editors can often work with proxy files—lower-bandwidth versions of camera originals—rather than moving or streaming every full-resolution file to every editing location. Adobe’s cloud-connected workflow describes editing proxies and then relinking to the original camera files for finishing. That makes the proxy-to-original relationship a core part of the plan, not an afterthought. Adobe’s remote-workflow white paper
Plan the proxy-to-original handoff
- Set consistent names, metadata, and folder or asset-management rules so proxies can be matched to the correct camera originals.
- Decide who creates proxies, where they are stored, and how editorial changes will be conformed or relinked for finishing.
- Test the handoff with representative footage before relying on it for a production deadline.
AWS describes proxy workflows that can include media asset management, bin-locking, and auditing. Those controls address collaboration and media handling as well as bandwidth. AWS media workflow guidance

Myth: Cloud editing always requires proxies
Proxies are useful but not universal. An AWS feature-film case study describes a DaVinci Resolve deployment editing Blackmagic RAW 4K and 6K originals on cloud workstations using high-performance SSD storage, without creating proxies. This shows that direct-original editing is possible in a specific setup; it does not establish that every team, codec, connection, or budget can use the same approach. AWS feature-film case study

Myth: Cloud editing feels the same from anywhere
Remote editing depends on latency and on the workstation and remote-display setup. A responsive experience from one location does not prove that another location will feel the same. AWS discusses low-latency workstation options and locating latency-sensitive applications closer to users; the cited film workflow used an AWS Local Zone. Myth: Cloud is automatically cheaper
There is no universal savings figure established for cloud video workflows. The cost depends on the production’s usage pattern and retrieval needs. AWS identifies workstation runtime, transferred data, and other service costs as relevant factors; archive cost also depends on storage tier and access-speed requirements. Myth: The cloud eliminates local infrastructure
Some workflows still depend on on-premises components. AWS notes that baseband live-video processing or integration with local storage may need to remain local. A hybrid design can keep those functions in place while using cloud services for other stages. AWS Media Services overview

How to choose a cloud, local, or hybrid approach
Compare the workflow against its real constraints before choosing infrastructure:
- Media: What are the resolution, codec, and file sizes?
- Concurrency: How much footage must editors access simultaneously?
- Proxy handling: How will proxies be created, named, managed, and relinked or conformed to originals?
- Location and latency: Where are editors and workstations, and what response time does the work require?
- Storage and movement: Which storage tier fits the retrieval pattern, and how often will media move?
- Software and collaboration: What application licensing, permissions, and project-coordination features are required?
- Security and ownership: Who controls access, auditing, and day-to-day operations?
- Local dependencies: Does the workflow rely on live SDI or local-storage integration?
- Total cost: What do storage, compute runtime, transfer, other services, and support add up to?
These factors are supported by AWS deployment guidance and vendor workflow documentation; they do not point to one best architecture for every production. AWS Edit in the Cloud guidance AWS Media Services overview
