The right fix for a weak or unstable stream depends first on how you distribute it: when your computer sends a separate feed to every destination, its upload demand rises with each feed; with a cloud relay, your computer sends one feed and the service distributes it. Check that architecture, measure stable upload capacity, and match the encoder settings to every destination before changing hardware or lowering quality.
Why multistreaming can fail
Multistreaming—also called simulstreaming—can strain the connection, encoder, or setup in different ways. The main distinction is whether you encode and upload each destination feed locally or send one feed to a cloud relay. That choice changes how much upload capacity your connection needs and how much of the distribution work your computer handles.
- Local output to each destination: Your computer sends multiple feeds. Add their target bitrates to estimate the required upload.
- Cloud relay: Your computer sends one incoming feed to the relay, which distributes it to the destinations. This lowers creator-side upload demand, but adds a service dependency and may involve a subscription or plan limits.
For YouTube, the channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. You also need active accounts in good standing on the destinations you use, and may need each destination’s RTMP server URL and stream key. See YouTube’s guidance on streaming to multiple platforms.
How much upload speed do you need?
For locally encoded streams, add the target bitrate of each outgoing feed. YouTube’s example is a 6 Mbps stream plus a 4 Mbps stream: the combined target is 10 Mbps. YouTube advises aiming for upload capacity 1.5 to 2 times that total for stability, particularly on a shared connection. For that example, that means roughly 15–20 Mbps of available upload capacity—not merely a download-speed result.

Use the bitrates you actually plan to send; the example is not a universal minimum. Leave headroom for other network activity, especially on shared connections, and test under conditions similar to the live event. A cloud relay receives one feed from you, so you generally plan for that incoming feed rather than the sum of separate destination feeds; the relay’s own plan limits and requirements still matter.
Measure the connection you will actually use
- Run an upload-speed test while other people and devices are using the network as they normally will during the stream.
- Compare stable upload capacity with the total target bitrate for local outputs, or with the single incoming feed bitrate for a relay.
- Leave headroom rather than setting the encoder at the connection’s measured ceiling.
- During a test stream, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and check the destinations for their own warnings.
A speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee of a stable path to a particular ingest server. Test with representative network use and stream content that includes both audio and movement, as YouTube recommends.

Choose local encoding or a cloud relay
| Consideration | Local output to each destination | Cloud relay |
|---|---|---|
| Creator-side upload | Plan for the sum of the destination bitrates, with headroom. | Send one feed to the relay; it distributes the feeds onward. |
| Computer workload | Encoding multiple outputs can increase encoder or system load, depending on setup. | Your computer sends one feed; the relay handles distribution. Actual system load depends on the encoding setup. |
| Per-destination settings | Offers direct control over each output profile where the software supports it. | Available destination settings depend on the relay and plan. |
| Setup and scale | Requires configuring each destination and accounting for each outgoing feed. | Can simplify distribution; YouTube says relays are worth considering for more than two channels. |
| Trade-off | Does not require a relay service, but depends on your own connection and configuration. | Adds dependence on the relay and may bring subscription costs or plan limits. |
These are architectural trade-offs, not guarantees about a particular computer, relay, or plan. Check the service’s current supported destinations and limits before relying on it for an event.
Match encoder settings to every destination
Do not assume a single profile is ideal for every platform. Compare each destination’s current codec, bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, and keyframe requirements. A shared profile must be compatible with all destinations, and its bitrate must fit your available upload capacity.

YouTube’s current encoder guide calls for RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its H.264 bitrate guidance varies by resolution and frame rate, so choose a target from the current YouTube encoder settings guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every format. Destination specifications can change.
- Check each destination’s live-encoder requirements and obtain its current server URL and stream key.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate supported across the destinations you intend to serve.
- Select a bitrate appropriate to that output and the weakest relevant upload or destination limit.
- Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval for YouTube; confirm whether other destinations require a different profile.
- Run an end-to-end test with representative audio and movement, then check stream health on each destination.
Fix dropped frames and intermittent disconnections in OBS
OBS explains that dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or the set bitrate cannot be sustained. The problem may be insufficient stable upload, a poor route to the ingest server, software interference, or a mismatch with a destination’s requirements. Work through the causes rather than treating one setting as a universal cure.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Check upload demand. If sending separate outputs, total their bitrates and compare that sum with stable upload capacity. If it is too close to your available upload, lower the target bitrate or reduce the number of simultaneous local outputs.
- Try another ingest server or service. A different route may help if the problem is the path to the current ingest server. If using a relay, distinguish trouble reaching the relay from trouble at a destination.
- Check for software interference. Temporarily investigate VPNs, firewalls, security software, or bundled network-management utilities that could affect OBS connectivity. Change one factor at a time so you can identify what matters.
- Lower bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. This can reduce dropped frames, but it also reduces image quality. Keep the new bitrate within the destination’s current limits.
- Test dynamic bitrate only as mitigation. It may help respond to changing network conditions, but it does not repair an unstable connection or identify the underlying fault.
OBS published its troubleshooting guidance on September 30, 2024. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting article for the current troubleshooting steps.

If your computer has no Ethernet port, a compatible USB Ethernet adapter can be one way to test a wired connection. First establish that network reliability is the issue; an adapter is not a guaranteed fix for insufficient upload, an ingest-route problem, software interference, or incorrect encoder settings. Compatibility and effectiveness depend on your computer and the fault. YouTube’s network guidance and OBS’s troubleshooting steps are more useful starting points than assuming an accessory will resolve dropped frames.
