Common and Jennifer Hudson’s public story moved from a reported meeting on a film set in 2022 to an on-air confirmation in January 2024. Neither has publicly established an exact date when their private romance began. This timeline separates reported sightings and speculation from what the two said themselves.
Common and Jennifer Hudson’s relationship timeline
2022: They reportedly meet while filming Breathe
Us Weekly and Parade report that Common and Hudson met on the set of Breathe in 2022, where they played a married couple. Us Weekly describes their connection as beginning with friendship and meals together. The reported professional introduction does not establish when a romantic relationship began. Us Weekly’s timeline and Parade’s account provide the details.
July 2022: A Philadelphia meal fuels dating rumors
Us Weekly places the pair having a meal together in Philadelphia, where the thriller was filmed. The Los Angeles Times also describes Philadelphia dinner reports as the spark for dating speculation. A meal together was not a confirmation that they were dating.
September 2022: Hudson responds to speculation
Hudson told Entertainment Tonight, as quoted by Us Weekly, “People create their narratives of it.” She added: “We shot a film together and he played my husband. We gotta eat in between those moments.” That was her response to the rumors at the time; it does not establish a private dating timeline.

When did Common and Jennifer Hudson start dating?
The cited coverage places their meeting on the set of Breathe in 2022 and traces rumors to that year, but it does not give a confirmed date when they began a private romance. Hudson’s early comments framed the sightings around filming and meals, and her November 2023 statement that she was seeing someone did not identify Common. Their January 2024 on-air exchange is the first clear public acknowledgment in this timeline, not evidence of a precise start date.
Are Common and Jennifer Hudson engaged or still together?
Common’s October 2024 marriage remark was not an engagement announcement. The cited coverage does not verify their relationship or engagement status as of October 4, 2026, so it cannot establish whether they are together or engaged now.
