CBS was not moving forward with the proposed Cold Case reboot, according to TVLine’s September 18, 2024 report. It was a project that did not proceed—not a series that aired and was canceled after a season. The report did not explain why CBS passed, and the available accounts do not establish whether the idea resurfaced later.

Was the Cold Case reboot canceled?

TVLine reported on September 18, 2024, that CBS was no longer moving forward with the reboot project. The report, which attributed the status to Deadline, described a development project that did not proceed. It did not describe a completed series or an aired season being canceled. TVLine’s September 2024 status report said representatives for CBS and Warner Bros. Television had not immediately responded to a request for comment.

Why did CBS pass on the project?

No reason was given in the September 2024 report. It does not establish that ratings, production costs, music rights, scheduling, or creative disagreements played a role, so none of those explanations can be confirmed.

What was the reboot supposed to be about?

In April 2024, TVLine reported that CBS had a reboot in development. The proposed series would follow a new group of detectives investigating unsolved crimes, with the setting shifted from Philadelphia to the Southwest. Meredith Stiehm, creator of the original series, was reportedly attached to write and executive produce. The April report also named Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed as executive producers. These were reported plans for a project in development, not details of a produced or commissioned show. TVLine’s April 2024 report on the proposed premise has the development details.

How would it have differed from the original?

The original Cold Case ran on CBS for seven seasons, from 2003 to 2010. It followed the Philadelphia Police Department’s division investigating unsolved cases, with Kathryn Morris starring as homicide detective Lilly Rush. The proposed reboot would have kept the cold-case focus but introduced a different detective team and a Southwest setting.

Is a later revival confirmed?

The cited reports establish the project’s status as reported in September 2024; they do not establish whether a later revival or new deal was announced. The careful answer is that CBS was reported not to be moving forward with the proposal in September 2024, while any later development remains unverified by these accounts.
