In the 19th century, Colaba changed from a distinct island at Bombay’s southern edge, with a military presence, into a more accessible and commercially sought-after part of the city. The Colaba Causeway, built in 1838, linked it to Bombay; later road works reinforced that connection. The evidence shows rising access and property interest, but does not establish that “posh” was a consistent contemporary description of Colaba.
What was Colaba like in the 19th century?
Colaba was one of the southern islands in Bombay’s former island group. It was not yet simply a continuous extension of the city: its position and access changed as causeways and land reclamation joined the islands. Lady Falkland, writing in Chow-Chow in 1857, described Bombay’s earlier geography as a place where “Colaba being one” of at least three islands; she noted that raised causeways and filled estuaries had since united them. The Maharashtra State Gazetteer quotes her account (Greater Bombay Gazetteer).
The Gazetteer says Colaba had gradually been built over from 1743. It also records a military connection: around 1830, buildings erected by General Waddington were described as government military quarters. These details establish a backdrop of settlement and government use, not a uniform picture of who lived across Colaba.
How did the Colaba Causeway change the neighbourhood?
1838: a new connection to Bombay
The Colaba Causeway was constructed in 1838, joining Colaba and Old Woman’s Island to Bombay. The connection changed access to the southern islands and made movement between them and the city easier, according to the Maharashtra State Gazetteers’ historical accounts (Greater Bombay Gazetteer; Bombay City and Island Gazetteer).

After the causeway: commercial interest and speculation
The Gazetteer links the new junction with proposals for factories and wharves, intended to support mercantile activity. Its account also reports that Colaba property values rose by about 500 per cent after the connection. That figure is the Gazetteer’s historical claim, not an independently verified measure or a citywide statistic; it should be read as evidence of reported speculation and growing interest in land, rather than as a precise modern valuation.
What changed later in the century?
Colaba’s connection to Bombay continued to be improved. The Gazetteer records the widening and rebuilding of the causeway between 1861 and 1863, alongside other road works and reclamation projects. These works indicate that the causeway was part of an ongoing transformation of access and infrastructure, rather than a one-time change in 1838 (Bombay City and Island Gazetteer).

A Gazetteer passage quoting Maclean describes the wider waterfront as seen by a traveller arriving at Apollo Bandar around 1855 as “a foul and hideous foreshore” stretching from the Fort to Sewri and around Colaba and Back Bay. It is a description of the broader shore, not a direct account of Colaba’s residents or a complete portrait of the neighbourhood (Bombay City and Island Gazetteer).
Was 19th-century Colaba already “posh”?
“Posh” is useful as present-day shorthand for the neighbourhood’s later reputation, but the historical material does not show that the word—or its modern social meaning—was consistently applied to Colaba during the 19th century. The evidence instead supports a more specific account: Colaba had a military presence, became easier to reach after 1838, attracted commercial proposals and property speculation, and saw further infrastructure work in the 1860s. It does not establish a complete social-class profile or justify ranking Colaba against other Bombay neighbourhoods.

Sources and historical limits
The Maharashtra State Gazetteers provide the central account of Colaba’s island geography, military background, causeway, commercial speculation and later works. A 1901 Census of India catalog record distinguishes Colaba Ward from Fort Ward, offering a late-period administrative snapshot; it does not establish the neighbourhood’s social composition (Census of India catalog: 1901 historical account). The Gazetteer preface also notes that three volumes of historical material about the City and Island of Bombay were printed as groundwork for a larger official account (Bombay City and Island Gazetteer).
