Code of Silence gives its police investigation an unusual point of view: Alison Brooks, a Deaf woman who lip-reads, is recruited to help detectives monitor a robbery gang. Rose Ayling-Ellis leads the six-part ITV drama, whose central tension lies in whether Alison can use her skill to help the case while protecting herself from a suspect she is drawn to. That premise sets the series apart from a standard undercover procedural; whether it makes the thriller gripping depends on how well its crime plot and character drama work together.
What is Code of Silence about?
Alison Brooks works in a police canteen and has privately used lip-reading to observe conversations. When detectives DS Ashleigh Francis, played by Charlotte Ritchie, and DI James Marsh, played by Andrew Buchan, discover her ability, they recruit her to monitor a gang planning a high-stakes robbery in London. Alison’s interpretations help identify the target, but the assignment becomes more dangerous when she forms a connection with gang recruit Liam Barlow, played by Kieron Moore.
The setup gives the series two sources of tension: the mechanics of a police operation and Alison’s personal and ethical choices. She is also dealing with family pressures, a relationship ending, and the risks of concealing her role. The story therefore asks more than whether the detectives can stop a robbery; it places Alison’s perspective at the center of the investigation.
Does its premise make the thriller feel fresh?
Lip-reading is the distinctive hook, but the more meaningful question is whether Alison’s point of view shapes the storytelling rather than functioning only as a convenient investigative tool. The premise invites attention to what she can infer, what remains uncertain, and the personal cost of being asked to turn a communication skill into police surveillance. Her connection with Liam adds a conflict between the case and her own judgment.

That is a promising framework for a police drama, not proof that every procedural turn is plausible or that the representation succeeds in every scene. The available official descriptions establish the setup and production context, but not a basis for claiming a critical consensus about the writing, pacing, or authenticity. Viewers weighing the series should look for how it balances crime plotting with Alison’s life beyond the operation.

Catherine Moulton created and wrote the series. Diarmuid Goggins and Chanya Button directed, and Mammoth Screen lists Will Truefitt and Benji Walters among the writers. ITV says Moulton drew on her own experience of lip-reading and hearing loss; it also notes contributions from Deaf, disabled, and neurodiverse cast and crew. That is relevant production context, but it should not be mistaken for a guarantee about the finished drama’s representation.
How many episodes are there?
Code of Silence has six episodes. Mammoth Screen describes the commission as six one-hour episodes, while Apple TV lists runtimes of 45–46 minutes. The “one hour” description is best understood as a scheduling designation, not the screen time of each episode.

Is Code of Silence based on a true story?
The sources establish that creator Catherine Moulton drew on personal experience with lip-reading and hearing loss. They do not establish that Alison’s story or the robbery plot is based on a true story. Personal inspiration for aspects of a drama is not the same as a factual account.
