Spoilers for all six seasons, including the series finale, “Ex-Degenerate.” Cobra Kai wins the Sekai Taikai when Johnny Lawrence defeats Iron Dragons sensei Wolf in the deciding sensei match. The victory gives Johnny a second chance on the tournament mats where Daniel beat him in 1984—but the finale’s larger resolution is that Johnny and Daniel can work together without giving up their separate dojos or identities.
How does the Sekai Taikai end?
The tournament had been suspended after a chaotic brawl in Barcelona, where Cobra Kai fighter Kwon died. Silver pushes for the competition to resume, and the final episodes bring it to the San Fernando Valley. The results of the student finals leave Cobra Kai and the Iron Dragons tied, so their senseis must fight to decide the overall winner.

The student championships
Axel intentionally injures Robby, damaging Miyagi-Do’s chances. Samantha chooses not to fight, and Miyagi-Do drops out of contention. Kreese gives Cobra Kai’s boys’ finals place—the spot previously held by Kwon—to Miguel, with Johnny coaching him.
- Tory defeats Zara to win the girls’ championship for Cobra Kai.
- Miguel outscores Axel to win the boys’ championship for Cobra Kai.
Those wins are not enough to break the overall tie. The deciding match is between Johnny and Wolf, the Iron Dragons’ formidable sensei.

Johnny beats Wolf
Johnny initially struggles against Wolf. Daniel, in Johnny’s corner, urges him to draw on Cobra Kai’s directness and fight back. Johnny also recalls Miyagi-Do’s defensive lesson: let the opponent come to him. He adapts rather than relying on only one approach, then wins the match and the tournament for Cobra Kai.
The setting deliberately echoes the 1984 All Valley tournament. Johnny returns to the red mats where Daniel once beat him, this time with Daniel beside him rather than against him. Co-creator Jon Hurwitz told Netflix Tudum that the creators wanted Johnny to return to those mats and exorcise the demons of 1984 after he and Daniel had worked through their issues.

Why Daniel supports Johnny without abandoning Miyagi-Do
Daniel wears a Cobra Kai gi in Johnny’s corner but keeps his Miyagi-Do headband. That combination is a concise image of the finale’s resolution: Daniel supports Johnny and helps him win, but does not stop being himself. Ralph Macchio told Netflix Tudum, “I would not relinquish my Miyagi-Do headband,” explaining that Daniel was standing in solidarity with Johnny while remaining true to his own identity.
The two men do not settle their rivalry by proving one dojo or philosophy must erase the other. Johnny’s aggression and Daniel’s defensive patience both matter in the final match. The story’s answer is partnership across difference: each can keep his dojo and still learn from, and rely on, the other.
What happens to Kreese and Silver?
Kreese confronts Silver aboard Silver’s yacht to stop him from carrying out a threat against Johnny’s family. The two men fight; fuel spills, and Kreese’s smoldering cigar sets it alight. The boat explodes, but the finale shows neither man’s body or a witnessed confirmation of death.
The explosion strongly suggests that Kreese and Silver are out of the story, but their deaths are not visually confirmed. Co-creator Hayden Schlossberg told TV Guide that the image makes it look as though both men have been taken off the board. The TheWrap interview with the showrunners also discusses the yacht confrontation and the finale’s unresolved fates.
Kreese’s apology to Johnny
Before going after Silver, Kreese acknowledges the harm he caused Johnny and apologizes. Johnny can recognize both truths about their relationship: Kreese taught him things, and Kreese also hurt him through abandonment and abuse. The apology does not erase that history, but it lets Johnny name it without pretending the relationship was all good or all bad. Josh Heald told TheWrap that the reconciliation brings the childhood trauma established in the first episode to a culmination.
What Daniel learns about Mr. Miyagi
Daniel discovers that Miyagi’s past included a Sekai Taikai fight in which an opponent died. The revelation unsettles the idealized picture Daniel had of his mentor, but the finale does not fill in every missing detail or make all of Daniel’s questions disappear.

Instead, Daniel accepts that he may never know the whole story and can still honor the person he knew. The resolution is not that Miyagi was flawless, or that his past no longer matters. It is that a complicated past does not make the care and guidance Daniel received unreal.

Why the finale brings Johnny back to the red mats
Johnny’s championship circles back to the defeat that shaped his life, but it does not simply replay the 1984 movie. He gets the tournament victory he once believed he needed; it becomes meaningful because he can accept Daniel’s support, acknowledge Kreese’s complicated place in his life, and lead students with lessons drawn from more than one source.
Daniel’s role matters just as much. He can help Johnny without surrendering Miyagi-Do, and Johnny can use Miyagi-Do’s defensive patience without ceasing to be a Cobra Kai sensei. The ending treats their partnership as stronger than the old assumption that one style must defeat the other.
The series finale, “Ex-Degenerate,” was part of the final five episodes of Season 6, Part 3, released as Netflix’s Finale Event on February 13, 2025, according to the Netflix Media Center. TheWrap reported the six-season series run totaled 65 episodes.
