Coachella’s first weekend in 2025 ran April 11–13 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Among its most memorable moments were Lady Gaga’s theatrical headlining set, Brian May joining Benson Boone for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s unexpected collision of orchestral music and festival pop. This is an editorial selection, not a definitive ranking: the weekend’s highlights ranged from headline-scale spectacle to distinctive sets beyond the main stage.
Lady Gaga turned a headlining set into a multi-act spectacle
Friday’s headliner built her performance around theatrical scale and a career-spanning sequence. The Associated Press described it as a five-act show, while the Los Angeles Times called it a “rock opera.” GRAMMY.com reported that the set lasted 90 minutes. Those descriptions capture why Gaga’s performance stood out: it was presented not simply as a run of songs, but as a staged production with distinct chapters.
The labels are critics’ and outlets’ characterizations, rather than an objective measure of the weekend’s best performance. For sheer ambition and scale, however, Gaga’s set was one of Weekend One’s defining moments.
Benson Boone and Brian May bridged generations with “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Queen guitarist Brian May joined Benson Boone for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a surprise pairing reported by both GRAMMY.com and the Associated Press. The collaboration linked Boone’s contemporary pop presence with one of Queen’s most recognizable songs and its original guitarist. It was a compact, memorable example of how a guest appearance can turn a set into a story that spans musical eras.

The LA Phil brought orchestral music into the Outdoor Theatre
On Saturday, April 12, the Los Angeles Philharmonic played a 50-minute set at the Outdoor Theatre under Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel. The orchestra’s Coachella 2025 Photo Diary says it made its festival debut and was the first major orchestra to perform a full set at Coachella.

The program opened with Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries,” then moved between orchestral repertoire and songs with guest artists. Laufey performed “From the Start” and “Silver Lining”; Maren Morris joined for “My Church”; Becky G for “Shower”; and Zedd for “Clarity.” Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso also appeared, while LL Cool J joined the orchestra for “Mama Said Knock You Out.” The variety made the set a genuine cross-genre experiment rather than an orchestral interlude between pop performances.
Surprise appearances gave the weekend a second plotline
Guest appearances added unexpected turns across the festival. The Los Angeles Times reported that Senator Bernie Sanders introduced Clairo. Pitchfork highlighted Billie Eilish appearing with Charli XCX, while ABC News Australia reported Queen Latifah, Victoria Monét, Ciara, and Spiritbox joining Megan Thee Stallion. These were among the weekend’s notable collaborations, not a complete guest list.

Other moments broadened the range of surprises: the Los Angeles Times pointed to T-Pain’s steampunk look and a crowd-participation moment, as well as the LA Phil backing LL Cool J. It also noted Post Malone’s country-inflected closing set. Together, the cameos and stylistic turns gave Weekend One more than one kind of spectacle.
Missy Elliott and other critics’ picks looked beyond the headliners
ABC News Australia’s reviewer named Missy Elliott’s career-spanning set as their personal highlight, praising its costumes, choreography, and song selection. That is one critic’s preference, not a universal verdict, but it points to a different measure of a standout performance: a tightly conceived show built around an artist’s own catalogue and stagecraft.

Pitchfork’s selections also extended beyond the headlining names, highlighting Beth Gibbons, Kraftwerk, HiTech, and Darkside. Those picks show why a Weekend One recap need not be limited to the biggest stages or surprise guests: distinctive performances elsewhere on the bill were part of the weekend’s musical character, too.
