CND SHELLAC is a branded gel polish system, and its manufacturer says the coating can be removed with acetone-based products without filing or buffing. That may make careful removal easier, but it does not prove that SHELLAC causes less nail damage than other gel systems. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) warns that gel manicures can leave nails brittle, peeling, or cracked; removal habits and breaks between manicures matter.
What CND SHELLAC is—and what “less damage” means
CND identifies SHELLAC as its gel polish system. “Shellac” is also used casually for nail coatings, but removal instructions are not interchangeable: this article’s product-specific claims refer to CND SHELLAC, not every gel manicure or polish described by that name.
CND says acetone-based products pass through its coating to polymers in the base coat, allowing the coating to release without filing or buffing. This is the manufacturer’s explanation of its system, not independent proof that removal is damage-free. The sources available do not establish a clinical comparison showing that CND SHELLAC causes less damage than competing gel systems.
What the evidence says about wear and nail health
Wear depends on the person and product
CND says wear varies with nail type and lifestyle. It claims its Epic Smoothing Base can extend wear up to 21 days; that is a manufacturer claim for use with the specified base, not an independently tested comparison with other gel polish or ordinary polish. CND also uses promotional language about its formula: “We understand that nails don’t breathe, but the CND™ SHELLAC™ formula does.” That statement should not be treated as a clinical finding.

Gel manicures can affect nails and surrounding skin
The AAD says gel manicures can cause nail brittleness, peeling, and cracking. It also warns that repeated gel manicures can increase the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging on the hands because of curing-light exposure. It recommends protecting hands with broad-spectrum sunscreen or opaque, fingertip-free gloves before exposure to the lamp.
How to reduce avoidable damage
Before and during a manicure
- Ask whether salon tools are properly disinfected, and avoid having cuticles cut; the AAD notes that cuticles help protect the nail and surrounding skin from infection.
- Do not pick or peel gel polish. The AAD warns that picking or filing it off can significantly damage nails.
- Consider traditional polish if you have recurring nail problems or an acetone allergy.
- Protect the backs of your hands from curing-light exposure with sunscreen or opaque gloves that leave fingertips exposed.
Removing gel polish at home
The AAD’s removal guidance is general advice for gel polish; follow the specific instructions for the product you are removing. CND’s claims about removal without filing or buffing apply to its SHELLAC system, not necessarily to other coatings.

- Use cotton sized to each nail, saturate it with acetone, place it over the nail, and secure it with plastic wrap or an appropriate removal wrap. This keeps acetone focused mainly on the nail rather than the surrounding skin.
- Let the product loosen according to its instructions. Do not pry, scrape aggressively, or file the coating off.
- If residue remains, the AAD advises gently rubbing it away with a warm, wet washcloth rather than scraping.
- After removal, moisturize nails and cuticles. Limit acetone contact with surrounding skin.
Give nails time between manicures
The AAD recommends taking a one- to two-week break from polish, or longer, and moisturizing nails and cuticles during the break. If you want to avoid another removal, it also describes letting gel polish grow out. Fingernails take about six months to grow out, according to dermatologist Shari Lipner in the AAD’s guidance.

“Less damage” is not established by wear duration or a product’s removal claim alone. When comparing options, consider what the removal actually requires and whether you can follow the instructions without picking or filing. Also weigh nail preparation, how much acetone contacts surrounding skin, how long you plan to wear the coating, and whether you will take breaks. A soak-off process that avoids filing may reduce one source of mechanical stress, but the available guidance does not establish that it makes SHELLAC safer overall than other gel systems.
