He also hoped that country-music fans who felt different would hear his story and know they belonged.
When Cody Alan came out
On January 12, 2017, Alan publicly came out in an Instagram post. He was then the host of CMT’s Hot 20 Countdown. TheWrap reproduced his announcement, in which he wrote: “This is not a choice I made, but something I’ve known about myself my whole life.” He also expressed a hope “to live the most honest, authentic, loving, and open life possible.” TheWrap reported on the announcement.

Why he said he chose that moment
In a 2017 interview, Alan said he had known he was gay from a young age but spent years trying to do what he thought was expected of him. As he reflected on having shared so much of his life publicly, he questioned why he should keep this part private: “I had this connection with the audience I had built, so why would I keep my secret?” In the interview with A Drink With, he described coming out as gradual: first telling those closest to him, then speaking publicly once he felt comfortable in his own skin.
What he hoped his visibility would do
Alan said he wanted to be a voice for people facing struggles and hoped his story might reach a country fan who felt out of place. “There’s some person out there who’s loving country music and thinks they don’t fit in, and that’s not true: You do fit in here, and there’s a place for people who are different,” he said in a contemporaneous interview quoted by LGBTQ Nation. His stated aim was to signal belonging, not to claim that everyone in country music shared the same experience.

How Alan later reflected on coming out
In a 2021 interview about his memoir Hear’s the Thing, Alan looked back on coming out in 2017 and said he believed his perspective could help others hear, read, or learn from his experience. He also described the country scene as becoming more open and inclusive. That was his personal assessment, not a measurement of the industry as a whole. Spotify’s 2021 profile of Alan and his memoir said the book, which includes a chapter about coming out, was due out November 9, 2021.
