CMAT’s third album, EURO-COUNTRY, is a 12-song, 49-minute blend of catchy pop, country inflections, synths, fiddle and flashes of rock. Its exuberant sound carries weightier subjects: grief, body image, Irish identity and the economic legacy of the Celtic Tiger. The album is compelling and sharply individual, though The Irish Times hears the pacing lose momentum in the second half.
What is EURO-COUNTRY?
CMAT’s album was released on August 29, 2025. Apple Music lists 12 tracks and a total runtime of 49 minutes. The Associated Press identifies it as her third studio album. Its sequence begins with “Billy Byrne from Ballybrack, the Leader of the Pigeon Convoy” and ends with “Janis Joplining.” Apple Music’s album listing provides the release details.
What does CMAT mean by “Euro-Country”?
The title joins three ideas rather than naming a narrow genre: CMAT’s country-inflected music, Ireland as a European country using the euro, and her criticism of capitalism. In BMG’s album announcement, CMAT explains: “I have certain phrases that reverberate around my head over and over again – and EURO-COUNTRY was one of them. It’s the title of the album, and the name of the first song on the record. And it means three things to me: It’s the kind of country music I make; the fact that Ireland is a European country run by the euro; and that capitalism is one of the worst things to ever happen to us.” BMG’s announcement places that idea at the heart of the record.
What does the album sound like?
Calling it simply a country album would miss its range. The Associated Press hears country-pop rhythms, retro ’70s grooves, danceable pop and alt-rock swagger; The Guardian describes a broader palette of soul, yodeling, fiddle, harmonies, synths and more unusual arrangements. The styles serve songs that can be buoyant in sound without being lightweight in subject.

The title track makes the album’s blend especially clear: Irish-language singing opens a song that ties Ireland’s economic history to memories of CMAT’s adolescence in County Meath. Elsewhere, “The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station” brings a more forceful rock edge. That contrast between movement and reflection is a defining feature of the record.
How do the songs connect personal experience and Irish identity?
CMAT told Apple Music that she recorded the album in New York and described it as born of grief and loss. Its emotional perspective moves between private pain and the oddities, warmth and contradictions of home.

Grief, memory and home
The opening track uses a documentary recording to evoke what CMAT loves about Ireland: its weirdness, beauty and warmth. The title track scales up from adolescent memories to the country’s economic rise and decline. The result is not a detached history lesson; national change is filtered through the texture of ordinary life.
Body image and self-critique
“Take a Sexy Picture of Me” responds to cruel comments about CMAT’s appearance. Rather than treating that subject as a side note, the song brings body shaming into an album already concerned with how people are judged and shaped by their surroundings.

Irrational hatred and intolerance
CMAT describes “The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station” as a meditation on irrational hatred and intolerance. Its subject extends the album’s social dimension beyond economics: the songs also examine the impulses and resentments people direct at one another.

There is a specific caveat: The Irish Times finds the pacing slightly uneven, with consecutive mid-tempo ballads causing the second half to fade somewhat. The same review praises the way joy and sadness coexist in the album. That reservation matters most to listeners who want the record to sustain its opening momentum throughout.
