Recommended Free Tools
You can read free classic novels on a Kindle by downloading public-domain ebooks from Project Gutenberg and, on newer Kindles, sending an EPUB3 file to your device with Amazon Send-to-Kindle. Start with Pride and Prejudice, Moby Dick, Frankenstein or The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. These are Gutenberg recommendations—not a guarantee that their Kindle Store editions are free, or that every edition is public domain in every country.
Where to find free classic novels
Project Gutenberg’s free ebook catalog is a practical place to begin. It focuses on older works whose U.S. copyright has expired and offers options to read books in a browser or download them. Its catalog displayed 79,471 free ebooks on October 8, 2026; that figure is live and changes over time.
Four titles to start with
- Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
- Moby Dick; Or, The Whale by Herman Melville
- Frankenstein; or, the modern prometheus by Mary Shelley
- The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
Project Gutenberg highlighted these among its popular titles when its catalog was checked on October 8, 2026. Search the catalog for a title, then choose a reading or download option on its book page.
How to send a Gutenberg book to your Kindle
For newer Kindle devices, Project Gutenberg’s reading guidance recommends downloading the EPUB3 file and uploading it through Amazon Send-to-Kindle. Use the Amazon site for your country and follow its current upload steps.

- Find the book in Project Gutenberg’s catalog and open its book page.
- Choose the EPUB3 download option.
- Open Amazon Send-to-Kindle for your region, sign in to the account connected to your Kindle, and upload the file.
- After Amazon processes the upload, check your Kindle library or device for the book. If it does not appear, confirm that you used the right account and that the upload completed.
You can also read a Gutenberg book in your browser, so transferring a file is optional. Amazon’s upload interface and device support can vary; use the regional Amazon site for current instructions.
Free Gutenberg files are not the same as free Kindle Store editions
A Gutenberg download is one route to a free ebook; buying or downloading a Kindle Store edition is another. Amazon’s December 2010 press release said, “Millions of free, out-of-copyright books are available to read on Kindle, including these two classic Dickens books.” That historical statement does not establish today’s price or availability for any specific Kindle Store title. Check the relevant country’s storefront if you want a particular Store edition.

Check copyright status where you live
Project Gutenberg’s public-domain framing is U.S.-focused. A book that is free to download there may not be public domain in your country, and copyright status can also depend on the specific edition. If you are outside the United States, check local copyright rules before downloading or sharing a file; do not treat a Gutenberg listing as a worldwide rights guarantee.

| Route | What it offers | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Project Gutenberg in a browser | Read a book online without transferring a file. | Gutenberg’s public-domain framing is U.S.-focused; verify local rules where relevant. |
| Gutenberg EPUB3 sent to Kindle | Download a Gutenberg ebook and upload it through Amazon Send-to-Kindle; Gutenberg describes this option for newer Kindles. | Use the Amazon site for your country. Device and upload support may vary. |
| Kindle Store edition | Read an edition offered through Amazon’s storefront. | Current price and availability by country are not established here; check the local Store listing. |
These routes do not establish which edition has the best text, introduction or notes. Check the individual book page or Store listing for edition details rather than assuming that all versions are identical.
