The 2010 film is a separate remake, not the original. Here’s how to tell the versions apart and what the available records establish about each.
Which Clash of the Titans is the original?
The original film is Clash of the Titans (1981), directed by Desmond Davis. The British Film Institute (BFI) credits Charles H. Schneer and Ray Harryhausen as producers, Beverley Cross as writer, and Laurence Olivier, Claire Bloom, and Maggie Smith among its cast. The BFI lists its running time as 118 minutes. BFI film record.
Clash of the Titans (2010), directed by Louis Leterrier, is a later remake centered on the same mythic hero, Perseus. Legendary gives April 2, 2010 as its original release date and Warner Bros as distributor. Legendary’s film page.
How the 1981 and 2010 films differ
| Film | Director and credited writer | Cast identified in the records | Story description and running time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clash of the Titans (1981) | Desmond Davis; Beverley Cross | Laurence Olivier, Claire Bloom, Maggie Smith | The BFI record establishes the film’s myth-adaptation context and lists a 118-minute running time. BFI record. |
| Clash of the Titans (2010) | Louis Leterrier; Travis Beacham, Phil Hay, and Matt Manfredi | Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Mads Mikkelsen | The British Council UK Films Database synopsis follows Perseus, raised as a man but born of a god, on a mission against Hades. A single comparable running-time figure is not stated in that record. British Council UK Films Database. |
The BFI’s 118-minute figure and the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC)’s approximate 113-minute figure for the 1981 film refer to different catalog records. The BBFC page includes more than one classification entry, including a 1981 cinema version with cuts and a 2006 physical-media/VOD record; the figures should not be treated as runtimes for one identical version. Who plays Perseus?
Sam Worthington is among the principal cast listed for Clash of the Titans (2010), the film whose British Council synopsis explicitly centers on Perseus. The same entry lists Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Mads Mikkelsen. For the 1981 film, the BFI lists Laurence Olivier, Claire Bloom, and Maggie Smith among its cast; the cited record does not identify a performer as Perseus in the material summarized here.
Is Clash of the Titans suitable for children?
For the 1981 film, the BBFC’s UK classification guidance describes moderate fantasy violence and nudity. Its examples include a man burned at the stake, a monster’s head chopped off with a sword, and visible nudity. This is UK guidance for the 1981 film, not a universal age recommendation, and it should not be applied to the 2010 film.
