It sets up a fractured, multi-faction America without giving viewers a definitive account of the conflict.
What does the map in Civil War mean?
A24 posted the map on April 2, 2024, alongside the prompt “Pledge your allegiance,” according to BGR’s report. Its central effect is to suggest that the conflict is not simply a war between two sides: the map identifies four factions. It does not supply a history of how the country split or a political program for any faction.

The map is a piece of film promotion, not a guide to real-world political alignments or a prediction about actual events. Its labels and arrangement are the details viewers can take from it; explanations of the factions’ motives remain unanswered.
What are the factions in Civil War?
BGR reports four names on the map:
- Loyalist States
- New People’s Army
- Western Forces
- Florida Alliance
BGR describes the Western Forces as comprising California and Texas, which are not contiguous. The map’s broad regional placements offer a starting point for imagining the fictional conflict, but do not establish how the factions formed, what they seek, or how their alliances work.

#1 Best Overall
- A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor's edge.
Who is fighting whom, and what caused the war?
The teaser does not answer either question. It names the factions but does not explain their origins, aims, or the events that led to civil war. Any more detailed account of who initiated the conflict or why a group joined a particular side would go beyond what this map establishes.
A24 describes Civil War as a near-future story set in a fractured America. The film page identifies Alex Garland as its writer and director and lists Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman among its stars. A24’s synopsis calls it “An adrenaline-fueled thrill ride through a near-future fractured America balanced on the razor’s edge.” That is the distributor’s promotional description, rather than an explanation of the map’s political backstory. See A24’s film page.
