No. Spotify’s 2023 Premium-only lyrics prompt was a limited test for some Free listeners, not proof that lyrics became universally Premium-only. Spotify’s published guidance now says lyrics are available on both Free and Premium, although individual songs and features may vary by market, device, rights and whether you are listening offline.
What happened in Spotify’s 2023 lyrics test?
In September 2023, some Spotify Free listeners saw a prompt saying “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium.” Spotify PR executive CJ Stanley described it to The Verge, as quoted by TechCrunch, as “only a test”; Stanley said Spotify was “currently testing this with a limited number of users in a pair of markets.” The report did not name those markets, disclose the number of users, or say what the test measured or how it ended. TechCrunch’s September 5, 2023 report therefore documents a restricted experiment, not a global policy change.

Can Spotify Free users see lyrics now?
Yes, according to Spotify’s published general guidance. A July 30, 2024 response from Spotify Community said the company would expand lyrics availability for Free users globally. Spotify Support currently states that lyrics are available across both Free and Premium tiers. That does not guarantee lyrics for every track or account: Spotify says availability can vary over time, between markets and devices, and according to agreements with rights holders. See Spotify Community’s July 30, 2024 response and the Spotify Support lyrics guidance.
Why might Spotify still say you need Premium?
A Premium prompt does not, by itself, mean that all Spotify lyrics require a subscription. Possible explanations supported by Spotify’s guidance include a feature or rollout difference affecting your market or device, or the availability of that particular song. Rights-holder agreements can also affect which lyrics appear. Spotify’s public information does not identify the cause of every individual prompt, so check another track or device and consult the app’s current account and feature details rather than assuming the 2023 test became a universal rule.

Streaming lyrics and offline lyrics are different
Lyrics visible while streaming are distinct from lyrics available without an internet connection. In its February 4, 2026 announcement, Spotify described translations and lyric previews as available to Free and Premium users, while lyrics accompanying downloaded tracks for offline listening were identified as a Premium feature. That distinction matters: an offline restriction does not mean ordinary lyrics while listening online are Premium-only. The announcement is at Spotify Newsroom.
How to open available lyrics
Spotify’s September 15, 2025 Free-experience guide says mobile listeners can swipe up from the Now Playing screen to show available lyrics. App controls can change, and lyrics will appear only when available for that track and account. The guide is available from Spotify Newsroom.

What the evidence does not show
Spotify has not publicly stated in these reports how many people saw the 2023 prompt, which markets were involved, what business outcome the test produced, or why it was run. The available statements support a limited test followed by later public guidance for Free-tier lyrics; they do not establish the company’s internal decision process.
