Cineplex and Landmark were among the Canadian chains named for National Cinema Day on September 3, 2022, when tickets cost $3 plus applicable taxes at participating theatres. The offer covered all movies, formats and showtimes that day; it was a one-day event, not an annual September 3 price.
What the $3 offer covered
The Movie Theatre Association of Canada and The Cinema Foundation announced the promotion on August 31, 2022. Their announcement described $3 admission, plus applicable taxes, for all movies, formats and showtimes on September 3 at participating theatres. The association’s announcement named Cineplex and Landmark among the Canadian participants.

“Participating theatres” matters: the announcement does not establish that every Cineplex or Landmark location took part, and it does not provide a complete branch-by-branch list. The offer was for September 3, 2022, not a standing ticket price.
How many people went?
The Cinema Foundation’s March 2023 State of the Cinema Industry report estimated that 8.1 million people attended the inaugural National Cinema Day. It recorded $23.8 million in box office returns for that day. These are reported totals for the 2022 event, not a measure of Cineplex or Landmark attendance individually.

Why 2023 reports refer to a different date
Cineplex held a later National Cinema Day celebration on August 27, 2023. In a release dated August 28, Cineplex reported nearly 700,000 guests that day and called it the second-busiest day in the company’s history at that time. That was a separate event; it does not mean the 2022 $3 offer continued into 2023. Read Cineplex’s 2023 event release.
