Chuck Woolery, the original host of Wheel of Fortune and the familiar face of the dating show Love Connection, died at his home in Texas on November 23, 2024. He was 83. The cause of death was not known in the initial reports, and the reporting cited here does not establish a confirmed cause.
What Chuck Woolery was famous for
Woolery became most closely associated with Love Connection, the syndicated dating show he began hosting in 1983. It ran for 11 years, ending in 1994. The Washington Post reported that Woolery hosted more than 2,100 episodes.
The show made a simple premise into a recurring studio conversation: viewers watched people choose dates, go out, and then recount what happened. Woolery’s easygoing presence and distinctive sign-off helped make the format recognizable.
How Love Connection worked
A contestant watched audition videos of three possible dates and chose one. After the date, the contestant returned to discuss the experience in front of a studio audience. Audience members could vote among the three prospective matches; if they supported the contestant’s choice, the show offered to pay for a second date.

He was the original host of Wheel of Fortune
Wheel of Fortune debuted on NBC on January 6, 1975, with Woolery as its first host. He left in 1981 after a contract dispute, and Pat Sajak took over. The role came before Love Connection, but it was the latter’s long syndicated run that became the defining association of Woolery’s hosting career.
