In Saharu Nusaiba Kannanari’s debut novel Chronicle of an Hour and a Half, a rumour about an alleged affair spreads through WhatsApp and village gossip until a crowd turns suspicion into violence. In her Scroll.in review, Sayari Debnath asks the question the novel leaves with its readers: “What if I become the mob?”

What happens in Chronicle of an Hour and a Half?

The novel compresses its central episode into roughly 90 minutes. As Debnath describes it, relentless rain surrounds a village in Kerala while messages circulate about Reyhana, a woman in her forties, and Burhan, a younger man. Family members and neighbours treat the rumour as a public moral matter. The resulting escalation ends in Burhan’s death.

This is a plot summary of a novel, not a report that these events happened as narrated in real life. The sources also describe the fictional setting differently: Debnath’s review places the opening in Areekode, while an agency synopsis names the village Vaiga. Those descriptions should not be collapsed into a single confirmed place.

How does a rumour become a mob?

The novel’s escalation begins not with proof but with circulation. WhatsApp messages and local gossip give an allegation momentum; repetition makes it feel like shared knowledge, and shared knowledge supplies a crowd with a rationale to intervene. Debnath quotes the novel: “…In that silent consensus, the crowd was becoming a mob.”

That shift is the book’s central moral pressure point. The question is not merely whether Reyhana has breached a community’s expectations. It is also who gets to decide that an accusation warrants punishment—and how people who consider themselves guardians of honour cross into taking the law into their own hands. Debnath also quotes the novel’s blunt challenge: “Who can resist a mob?”

Why does the review ask, “What if I become the mob?”

Debnath reads the story as an examination of gendered double standards and moral policing. Reyhana’s private life becomes material for public judgment, while the crowd’s self-appointed authority turns judgment into danger. Privacy and consent sit at the centre of that conflict: a rumour can expose and endanger people even when those passing it along imagine themselves to be enforcing communal values.

The question “What if I become the mob?” turns attention away from a safely distant crowd and toward the reader’s own place in it. The novel asks how ordinary participation—repeating a claim, accepting a consensus, or treating punishment as someone else’s responsibility—can help a group become violent. Its treatment of misogyny, sexual coercion fantasies, and a child’s exposure to pornography is disturbing; these elements are part of the novel’s portrayal of harm, not material for sensationalism.

How does the novel’s multiple-voice structure work?

Debnath describes roughly a dozen narrators telling a story whose central incident lasts about 90 minutes. Rather than presenting the crowd as a single mind, the voices let the reader encounter individual perspectives and the lives and motives behind them.

In a Scroll interview published March 10, 2024, Kannanari explained the form’s purpose: “Multiple voices served the twin purposes of telling the central story of mob lynching and, secondly, telling it through a host of narrators whose familial lives and psychological make-up also come to the reader’s light in flashes rather than detailed descriptions.” He named William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying as a natural influence. The brief glimpses of family life and psychology widen the story beyond the immediate rumour, showing how the people inside a crowd remain individuals even as they participate in a collective act.

What real incident did the author recall?

In that interview, Kannanari recalled a mob-lynching incident near Mukkam in Calicut district, over an extramarital affair, which he said occurred in 2010 or 2011 and was referred to by a character. He also said he did not know the case details. This is the author’s recollection of background, not an independently verified account of the event, and it does not make the novel’s plot a factual reconstruction.
