It adapts Homer’s foundational saga as a mythic action epic, with Nolan writing and directing. Its unusually large-format production and international locations are among the clearest ways to understand what makes this version distinctive.
What is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey about?
Universal describes the movie as a “mythic action epic” bringing Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens. That confirms the source and broad approach, but not a scene-by-scene adaptation: the studio has not established that every episode or detail of the ancient poem appears in the film.

Nolan has described the poem’s cultural reach by saying, “It’s not a story—it’s the story,” as reported by NBCUniversal. The film is his interpretation of an enduring epic, rather than a documentary account of ancient history.
Who made the film, and who is in the cast?
Nolan wrote and directed The Odyssey, and produced it with Emma Thomas for their company Syncopy, according to Universal. The confirmed ensemble includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

NBCUniversal identifies Holland as Telemachus and Hathaway as Penelope. The Associated Press identifies Damon as Odysseus, Zendaya as Athena, Pattinson as Antinous, Theron as Calypso, and Nyong’o as Helen. These character identifications are attributed to those reports; the studio’s main film-page cast listing confirms the actors but does not itself list every role.
When did The Odyssey come out?
The film opened theatrically on July 17, 2026, in the United States and Canada, according to Universal’s regional pages. Universal Canada currently labels it “NOW PLAYING.” That is a theatrical status, not confirmation of a digital rental, purchase, disc release, or streaming date; those home-viewing details have not been established here.

Why is its IMAX production notable?
NBCUniversal called it the first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras; the Associated Press described it as the first feature shot entirely on IMAX film. Those phrasings refer to the camera system and film medium respectively, and both reports frame the production as a milestone for large-format filmmaking.
The cameras created a practical challenge: their noise made dialogue-heavy scenes difficult. AP reports that the team developed a muffler known as “the blimp.” The new camera was named The Keighley, after IMAX executives Patricia and David Keighley.

Where was the movie filmed?
The production used real locations and sets to represent places from the myth. The Associated Press reported that Troy was constructed in Morocco, a Cyclops cave was found in the foothills of Greece, Iceland’s black sands stood in for Hades, and Favignana, near Sicily, represented Ithaca.
The production also used a real ship, the Draken, modified to evoke the Mycenaean era; the actors learned to row. These choices describe how the filmmakers created the movie’s settings, not evidence that the story is a historical record.

Which theatrical format should you choose?
NBCUniversal highlighted screenings in IMAX, IMAX 70mm, 35mm, Dolby Cinema, and other premium large formats. These are not interchangeable labels: film presentation, digital presentation, screen size, venue, and sound setup can differ. The sources establish that these options were offered, but not a universal ranking of picture or sound quality across every theater.
- IMAX 70mm: A film presentation option for venues equipped to show it. AP reported that 41 IMAX 70mm screens generated $6.3 million during the opening weekend; that is a limited-screen opening-weekend figure, not a current total.
- Other IMAX screenings: IMAX-branded presentations were available, but the label alone does not establish that a location is showing 70mm film.
- 35mm: A separate film-format option listed by NBCUniversal.
- Dolby Cinema and other premium large formats: Alternative theatrical presentations, with availability and specific equipment varying by venue.
Check current local showtimes for the exact format and theater. A format’s availability in the release does not mean every location offers it.
What were the opening-weekend numbers?
The Associated Press reported estimated worldwide opening-weekend earnings of $264.1 million on July 19, 2026: $124.5 million domestic and $139.6 million international. These are opening-weekend estimates, not a current cumulative box-office total. AP also reported $51.8 million worldwide for IMAX during that weekend, which it described as IMAX’s best weekend at that time.
No reliable, internally consistent current cumulative total is established here, so the opening figures should not be treated as the film’s eventual gross.
