Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey adapts Homer’s epic and opened in theaters on July 17, 2026. Its promotional first-look material introduced a cast led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Robert Pattinson as Antinous and Zendaya as Athena. Universal describes the film as a mythic action epic filmed around the world for IMAX screens.
What the first look reveals
The film’s trailers and behind-the-scenes promotion present Homer’s homecoming saga as a large-scale action epic. Universal’s official film page describes the adaptation as a mythic action epic filmed around the world using new IMAX film technology. The studio’s framing signals spectacle, but the story remains rooted in Odysseus’s journey home after the Trojan War and the people waiting for him in Ithaca.

In an Associated Press summer-movie preview, Nolan said: “To see Greek mythology brought to the big screen with all of the resources that Hollywood has bringing that to bear on the story, it feels like something that is long overdue. And I’m really excited to be able to do it.”

For viewers approaching the story through its familiar mythic figures, the confirmed roles establish the central family and several figures Odysseus encounters. The AP report does not identify a character for Nyong’o, so her part should not be inferred from the cast list alone.
Was it shot entirely with IMAX cameras?
NBCUniversal described the April 2026 trailer as the first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. That is a studio-reported production claim; it is distinct from Universal’s broader description of the movie as filmed around the world using new IMAX film technology. The trailer announcement also highlighted the Trojan Horse and a sequence staged with thousands of soldiers and practical effects. Those details are promotional descriptions from NBCUniversal, not independent verification of the production process.

The IMAX emphasis is central to how the studio presented the film: large-scale images and set pieces designed for a theatrical screen. Individual theaters and formats can differ, so the camera claim does not by itself guarantee that every screening uses the same presentation format.
When did The Odyssey come out?
Universal listed July 17, 2026 as the film’s broad theatrical release date. It has already opened. The Associated Press reported an estimated $264.1 million global opening, comprising $124.5 million domestic and $139.6 million overseas, in its July 19, 2026 report. Those are opening-weekend estimates, not a lifetime total.

In a later post-release announcement, NBCUniversal said the film had reached $1,104,805,000 in global gross within its first month and called it Nolan’s highest-grossing film at that time. That figure is the studio’s report for that point in the release, not a current lifetime total.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Nolan’s film based on Homer’s The Odyssey?
Yes. Universal describes the film as an adaptation of Homer’s foundational saga. The poem follows Odysseus’s difficult return to Ithaca and the challenges faced by his family during his absence. Nolan’s adaptation brings that ancient story to the screen as an action epic; the promotional material does not, by itself, establish how closely the finished film follows every episode or detail of the poem.

A useful edition for reading the source
Readers who want to explore the poem can start with Robert Fagles’s translation, published in paperback by Penguin Classics. The publisher listing says this edition includes maps, genealogy tables and pronunciation guides. Those features can help readers keep track of places, family relationships and names; they do not make this translation definitively better than other editions.
