Christina Aguilera and Sabrina Carpenter performed “What a Girl Wants” together twice in 2024: first in an anniversary session for Spotify, then in a surprise appearance during Carpenter’s Los Angeles tour show. The studio recording celebrated 25 years since Aguilera’s self-titled debut; the live reprise followed about seven weeks later.
The Spotify anniversary performance came first
Announced September 24, 2024, the first duet was recorded at Spotify Studios in Los Angeles for Spotify Anniversaries, a series marking the 25th anniversary of Aguilera’s self-titled debut album. Aguilera performed reimagined, acoustic versions of songs from the record with guests including Carpenter and mgk. Sony Music Spain described the session and its anniversary purpose in its announcement.
The project also produced a six-track live EP. Its listed songs were “Come On Over,” “Genie in a Bottle” featuring mgk, “Obvious,” “I Turn to You,” “Reflection,” and “What A Girl Wants” featuring Sabrina Carpenter. The Carpenter duet was one track in a broader look back at Aguilera’s debut, rather than a standalone release.
Carpenter described Aguilera as an influence
During their anniversary-session conversation, Carpenter told Aguilera that her mother had shown her a video of Aguilera singing “A Sunday Kind of Love” as a child on Star Search. ABC Audio reported Carpenter explaining the effect of seeing that performance: “And it was the main reason that I started singing and I wanted to become a singer.”

Aguilera also reflected on “Reflection,” saying, “People love that song so much because it’s about not being seen and that’s been a part of my career, so much.” The exchange connected the session’s music to personal memories: Carpenter’s account of discovering Aguilera as a young singer, and Aguilera’s thoughts on a song that continued to resonate with her.
The November 15 tour appearance was a separate reprise
On November 15, 2024, Aguilera appeared as a surprise guest at Carpenter’s Los Angeles show on the final U.S. leg of the Short N’ Sweet tour. They performed “Ain’t No Other Man” before “What a Girl Wants.” ABC News reported that the later song drew on their recent anniversary collaboration; Rolling Stone Australia described the concert rendition as a scaled-back version echoing the earlier session.
