Christie Brinkley said in March 2024 that doctors removed basal cell carcinoma from her face. She described the cancer as caught early; her disclosure is a personal account, not a guide to diagnosing or treating another person’s skin lesion.
What Christie Brinkley disclosed
ABC News reported on March 14, 2024, that Brinkley had shared her diagnosis and recovery photos in an Instagram post the day before. The report identified the cancer as basal cell carcinoma and quoted Brinkley saying, “The good news for me is we caught the basal cell Carcinoma early.” She also thanked the doctors who removed it and stitched her up.
The available reporting does not establish which procedure was used. It is not possible to infer from the report that Brinkley had Mohs surgery or any other specific technique. UC Davis Health published a clinical explainer in March 2024, but general medical information about treatment should not be mistaken for details of Brinkley’s care.
What basal cell carcinoma is—and why a clinician must assess it
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes basal cell carcinoma as the most common type of skin cancer. It often grows slowly and rarely spreads, but it can grow deep into surrounding tissue. When found early and treated appropriately, it is highly treatable.

A spot’s appearance alone cannot confirm skin cancer. The AAD says diagnosis requires a skin biopsy: a clinician removes a sample and a laboratory examines it under a microscope. Treatment depends on the cancer’s type and depth, its location, and the person’s circumstances.
When to have a skin spot checked
See a dermatologist about a spot or growth that is growing, bleeding, not healing, or changing. These signs do not prove that a lesion is cancer; they are reasons to have it professionally assessed rather than trying to diagnose it yourself.

The AAD also advises people with a skin cancer diagnosis to follow their dermatologist’s recommendations for skin exams and follow-up after treatment.

The AAD recommends seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to uncovered skin. It advises sun protection year-round, including on cloudy days. These steps reduce exposure; they do not guarantee that skin cancer will be prevented.

In a 2024 statement on skin cancer misinformation, the AAD said that one in five Americans will get skin cancer and nearly 20 people die from melanoma each day. Those are AAD figures from 2024, not statistics specific to Brinkley or her diagnosis.
