The report says doctors noticed abnormal blood-test results while Miles, then six, was hospitalized with shigella. The exclusive John Legend interview implied by the supplied title, and any direct comment from him about the diagnosis, could not be verified.
What the family account says about Miles’s diagnosis
In coverage published August 1, 2024, East Coast Radio reported that Teigen said Miles’s type 1 diabetes came to light during a hospitalization for shigella. Doctors noticed in blood tests that something else was wrong, according to the account. This is secondary reporting of Teigen’s public post, not a medical-record account.
The report said Miles received his first insulin shot that week and wore a Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Teigen described the support she received after people noticed the monitor in a photo: “Miles had his arm up, and soooo many of you reached out to say the most beautiful and incredible words I have ever witnessed on this platform. You noticed his type-1 diabetes monitor and extended so much love and encouragement in every way possible.” East Coast Radio’s August 1, 2024 report also says Teigen shared a page from the children’s book Year One with Type One and that she and Legend read it with Miles.
What type 1 diabetes means for a child
Type 1 diabetes can begin at any age. It is thought to result from an autoimmune response that affects the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It is not caused by diet or lifestyle habits. Because the body cannot make the insulin it needs, people with type 1 diabetes need insulin and regular blood-glucose monitoring. A child’s care team determines an individual plan. How families manage care after diagnosis
Care is individualized; a device mentioned in one family’s account is not a recommendation for every child. Families can discuss monitoring methods, insulin delivery options, training, access and coverage with the child’s health care team, and decide what fits the child’s care plan and family circumstances. The CDC identifies continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps as tools families may ask about, not requirements for all children.
The CDC also encourages diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES). Education can help families learn day-to-day care, while emotional support and support groups can help them navigate the adjustment. The child’s clinicians can advise on available resources and appropriate next steps.

How many young people have type 1 diabetes?
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases estimated that about 304,000 U.S. children and teens younger than 20 had type 1 diabetes in 2021. That is a dated estimate, not a current count. NIDDK’s type 1 diabetes overview provides the figure.
