On January 26, Nashville District Attorney General Glenn Funk announced that all charges had been dismissed after his office reviewed all the evidence.

Young was charged with assaulting an officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. The personnel involved were ABC agents, not Nashville police officers, so describing them simply as “officers” can obscure the agency involved. News reports used the “assaulting an officer” description because that was the reported charge, but the encounter itself involved state alcohol-regulatory agents.
The affidavit described Young as having bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech. It alleged that he questioned and recorded the agents after they checked his identification, followed them to the Dawg House with other people, and then put his hands out as the agents attempted to leave.
What did the arrest affidavit allege?
As reported by WSMV’s account of the affidavit, the agent alleged that Young struck the agent’s shoulder. The affidavit then characterized the agent’s response as a push intended to create distance.
The affidavit further alleged that another agent approached, Young stepped back and declined to follow orders, and the agents detained him. It portrayed the atmosphere as hostile and described Young’s eyes and speech in terms that prosecutors would have relied on as part of the reported account.

NewsChannel 5’s report described the footage as showing Young reach toward the agent before being shoved to the ground. WSMV similarly reported that the agent pushed Young much harder than the affidavit’s “pushed … to create distance” wording conveyed.

That creates a direct tension between the video and the affidavit’s characterization of the physical encounter. A local legal analyst quoted by NewsChannel 5 said, in his view, the footage did not show Young assaulting the agent. It is reasonable to say that the dismissal followed the release and review of the video, but it would go beyond the available record to claim that the district attorney expressly found that the agent fabricated the account or that the video alone legally required dismissal.
Dismissal is also not the same as an acquittal. An acquittal follows a trial or other proceeding resulting in a not-guilty determination. In Young’s case, the reported charges were dismissed before a conviction or trial verdict. The practical result was that the prosecution did not continue, but the terminology remains important when describing what happened legally.

Did Chris Young have bruises after the arrest?
