Spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine: Chris Evans returned as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch—not as Captain America. In a July 26, 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Evans said Ryan Reynolds personally invited him back, and explained why wearing his old Fantastic Four costume felt slightly easier this time.
Which character does Chris Evans play in Deadpool & Wolverine?
Evans reprises Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch, the character he played in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). The cameo is not a return as Steve Rogers or Captain America. The film briefly plays on that confusion: Deadpool initially thinks Evans looks like Steve Rogers before the reveal identifies him as Johnny.
Evans confirmed the appearance after taking part in the film’s San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel on July 25, 2024. The interview by senior editor Nick Romano was published the next day and carries a spoiler warning.
Why did Evans agree to return?
Evans said Reynolds contacted him directly by text to ask whether he would be interested in revisiting a character from 20 years earlier. He was excited by the invitation and agreed. “Ryan might be the only guy that I would’ve done it for because he’s just got the Midas touch,” Evans told Entertainment Weekly.

He also said Reynolds’s humor and self-awareness helped make the return feel safe. “His self-awareness makes him almost invincible,” Evans said. His comments point to the personal pitch and trust in Reynolds as central to his decision, rather than a broader plan to resume playing Johnny Storm.
What was it like filming the cameo?
Evans described the shoot as uncomplicated: “For me, it was pretty easy.” He said he flew in for a couple of filming days and then left. His account describes a brief cameo commitment, not a return to an ongoing role.

Was wearing the Fantastic Four suit easier this time?
Somewhat. Evans said the form-fitting blue costume was “slightly” easier to wear again because Johnny was supposed to look worn down in the scene. “Primarily because where we find Johnny, he’s meant to be a little more rundown, so the costume didn’t have to be pristine.” The difference was the character’s condition and the suit’s required appearance, not a claim that the costume itself had been redesigned.
How does Evans remember the original Fantastic Four films?
Evans described the two films as an important career milestone and spoke warmly about that period. “It’s nothing but fond memories,” he said. Elsewhere in the interview, he characterized his feelings as “nothing but love and affection” for the experience of making them.
