Its account centres on efforts to stop scam operations and arrests in 2023. Available reporting supports a specific China-Myanmar case study—not a broad claim that the series documents global anti-fraud cooperation.
What the documentary covers
The South China Morning Post described the series as an account of investigations into scam centres and joint operations against criminal families near the China-Myanmar border. It began airing between October 5 and 7, 2026, according to contemporaneous reports. Complete episode titles and transcripts are not available in those reports, so the series’ precise treatment of each event cannot be independently reconstructed from them.

The subject is part of a wider problem of telecom and online fraud targeting Chinese nationals, but the documentary’s reported focus is geographically specific: scam operations in northern Myanmar and the Chinese authorities’ response. “Global cooperation” should therefore be read cautiously. The accounts establish reported cooperation between China and Myanmar; they do not identify a wider roster of participating countries or establish the scope of a global campaign.
What the series says happened
As the South China Morning Post relayed the documentary’s account on October 6, 2026, Chinese officials made three attempts to persuade crime families to stop their scam operations before large-scale arrests in 2023. This is the sequence presented by the documentary as reported by the newspaper; the available account does not supply a complete evidentiary record for every allegation against individuals or families.

#1 Best Overall
The same report attributed to the documentary the claim that 80 per cent of telecom and online fraud crimes targeting Chinese nationals were committed overseas. The newspaper did not identify an underlying dataset, time period or calculation method. It is best understood as a figure stated by the documentary, not as an independently verified estimate.
How China-Myanmar cooperation appears in the reporting
Reuters Connect’s description of documentary footage dates a shooting incident involving Chinese nationals in Kokang to October 20, 2023. It says Chinese and Myanmar police formed a joint investigation team through a bilateral law-enforcement and security mechanism. The description provides a specific example of cooperation, but does not by itself establish how broadly that mechanism was used or whether other countries took part.

In the footage description, Yang Guoqiang, identified as deputy head of the Criminal Investigation Division under the Wenzhou Public Security Bureau, described the investigation area as extensive and said it included landmines and unexploded ordnance. He said the officers felt they had to proceed despite the risks. This is Yang’s account in footage supplied through Reuters Connect; it is not independent verification of the conditions he described.
Reported campaign and legal developments
Reuters Connect says Chinese authorities launched a special campaign against cross-border telecom and online fraud targeting China in northern Myanmar in July 2023. Its description also reports that 11 gang members received death sentences in September 2025 and were executed on January 29. The excerpt does not state the year of the January 29 executions, so it should not be inferred from that account alone.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available accounts establish—and leave open
- Established by contemporaneous reporting: the series has three parts, was jointly produced by China’s Ministry of Public Security and China Media Group, and is described as covering investigations and joint operations against scam networks in northern Myanmar.
- Attributed to the documentary: the three attempts to persuade crime families to stop operations, the subsequent large-scale arrests in 2023, and the 80 per cent overseas figure.
- Described by Reuters Connect: the Kokang shooting incident, formation of a Chinese-Myanmar joint investigation team under a bilateral mechanism, the July 2023 campaign, and the reported sentences and executions.
- Not established by these accounts: the methodology behind the 80 per cent figure, full episode contents, the year of the January 29 executions, or the breadth of cooperation beyond the China-Myanmar mechanism. They also do not establish a physical release or commercial streaming availability.
The distinction matters: a state-produced documentary can offer a detailed account of its government’s actions, while its claims still need to be attributed unless independently corroborated. The news reports and footage description provide useful dates and descriptions, but not complete transcripts, underlying datasets, court records or an independent investigation of every allegation.
