Tonia Haddix, featured in HBO’s Chimp Crazy, was sentenced in August 2025 to 46 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. She had pleaded guilty to two counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice over false claims that Tonka the chimpanzee had died and been cremated. Tonka was found alive in a basement cage in 2022, the Associated Press reported.
Why was Tonia Haddix sentenced to prison?
The sentence punished Haddix for perjury and obstruction—not for a standalone animal-cruelty conviction. The federal charges followed statements she made about Tonka’s death and whereabouts during court proceedings connected to an earlier civil dispute over chimpanzees at the Missouri Primate Foundation.
According to the Associated Press, Haddix claimed Tonka had died and that she had cremated his remains. He was later found alive in a basement cage at her Missouri home. In March 2025, Haddix pleaded guilty to two perjury counts and one obstruction count. The court imposed the 46-month prison term and three years of supervised release in August 2025. What happened to Tonka?
Tonka’s case began with litigation over chimpanzees held by the Missouri Primate Foundation. In 2020, Haddix signed a consent decree agreeing to send four chimpanzees to a Florida sanctuary, although the arrangement initially allowed three—including Tonka—to remain. After a court ruling over compliance in 2021, authorities removed chimpanzees. Haddix then said Tonka had died and been cremated. He was discovered alive in a basement cage in 2022, AP reported.

The civil litigation and the later federal criminal prosecution are related but distinct. The civil case concerned court orders involving the chimpanzees; Haddix’s federal guilty plea concerned her false statements and obstruction in connection with that litigation. How does Chimp Crazy fit into the case?
The four-part HBO documentary series aired in August 2024 and brought Haddix and Tonka’s story to a wider audience. It did not sentence Haddix; the prison term came from the federal court after her guilty plea. AP reported that Haddix discussed the events in the series, including in its third episode, where she said, “Tonka was literally on the run with me.” That is her account as reported by AP, not a court finding.

What is the status of Haddix’s appeal?
Haddix challenged the length of her sentence. The latest located coverage reports that a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit heard oral argument on September 22, 2026. Her attorney argued that 46 months was too long and characterized the offenses as more serious in the district court’s view than typical perjury and obstruction cases. That is the defense’s argument, not an independently established sentencing comparison. The report does not give an appellate ruling, so the outcome should be treated as unresolved unless a later court decision has been issued.
