Hailey Upton’s final episode sends her away from Intelligence without revealing which job she takes. The surprise return is Alvin Olinsky, who appears in a hallucination as Hank Voight struggles to survive captivity. Both choices keep the finale focused on the emotional history between the characters—and on Upton deciding what she wants next.
What happens to Upton in the season 11 finale?
After Intelligence rescues Voight from a serial killer, Upton considers several possible next steps, including positions with the FBI, FEMA, and DEA. She ultimately leaves for O’Hare, but the episode does not say which opportunity, if any, she has accepted. These are options she explores, not confirmed destinations.

This is Tracy Spiridakos’s final appearance as Upton in the series. Rather than provide a definite new job or destination, the finale ends her time with the unit on an open note. Showrunner Gwen Sigan said that leaving the decision unresolved was intended to give Upton “hope and possibility” and let viewers imagine where she goes next. TVLine’s May 22, 2024 interview with Sigan discusses the character’s departure and its open ending.
Why does Voight encourage her to leave?
Upton’s conversation with an injured Voight is the emotional center of her goodbye. She tells him she wants more for herself. Voight, despite the pain of losing her from Intelligence, tells her to choose what will make her happy—even if that means leaving him and the unit.
#1 Best Overall
Sigan described their bond as having a parental quality. In her account, Voight’s blessing gives Upton the confidence to make a choice for herself. The moment makes her departure more than a transfer or a response to the unit’s immediate needs: it is a decision about her own future.
Who returns in the finale—and is Olinsky really alive?
Alvin Olinsky, Voight’s deceased former partner, appears while Voight is being tortured, badly injured, and close to death. Played by Elias Koteas, Olinsky urges him to keep going. The scene is a hallucination, not a literal return from the dead.

Sigan said Olinsky was the right person to reach Voight because Voight carries unresolved guilt and shame over his partner’s death. The idea of bringing Olinsky back had been discussed for years after actor Jason Beghe proposed it. Sigan explained that Voight needed someone to jolt him into fighting to survive—and that it had to be Olinsky. TVLine’s May 23, 2024 interview with Sigan describes the thinking behind the appearance.

Jay Halstead does not appear. Sigan said the writers discussed the possibility, but she wanted Upton’s exit to center on Upton’s own choices and needs, rather than making it about Halstead or another character. She said the story explored the different paths Upton might take before coming back to the question of what she wanted for herself. TVLine’s May 23, 2024 interview with Sigan addresses Halstead’s absence.

What the ending leaves unresolved
The finale gives Upton a clear departure from Intelligence, but not a confirmed job or destination. That ambiguity is deliberate, according to Sigan: viewers are left with the possibility of imagining what comes next, rather than a single answer. Voight’s goodbye supplies the emotional permission for her to go; Olinsky’s hallucinated visit, meanwhile, connects Voight’s survival to the guilt and history he still carries.
