She said the decision was very difficult, but chose to leave Hailey Upton’s story with a final season rather than depart without warning.
Why did Tracy Spiridakos leave Chicago P.D.?
Spiridakos said she wanted to see what other work might be available and “wanted to switch it up.” She also described leaving as “a hard decision — very, very hard.” TVLine reported that she made the decision at the end of season 10 and told showrunner Gwen Sigan she wanted to do one more year, giving the writers time to bring Upton’s story to a close. TVLine’s May 21, 2024 report quoted Spiridakos through her interview with Variety.

What happened to Hailey Upton?
Upton’s final appearance was in the season 11 finale, which aired May 22, 2024. After helping rescue Voight, she considers possible career paths that include the FBI, FEMA and DEA, then leaves for O’Hare. The episode does not confirm which option she chooses. Showrunner Gwen Sigan told TVLine that Upton’s future was deliberately left open, describing the ending as one of “hope and possibility.”
Could Upton return?
Sigan said the open ending was intended to show Upton reaching a point where she could see the choices available to her. “I wanted this idea that the world is hers now,” Sigan said, adding that a future return remained possible. That leaves room for Upton to come back, but it does not confirm that she has chosen a new agency or will appear again.
