Spoilers for “Water and Honey” follow.
“Water and Honey,” the fifth episode of Chicago P.D. Season 12, gives Kiana Cook more than a promising introduction: she brings a murder investigation to Intelligence, helps move it forward, and earns Torres’s support for joining the unit. The episode makes its case for Cook through her work, not just through a new job title. That makes the claim that she gets “the episode she deserved” a persuasive critical judgment, even as the grim crime at its center sometimes competes with the character story.

The investigation involves Lucy Talsman, Jess Marks and Willow Hughes. Lucy is found dead, and the discovery of Liam Marks’s body is presented in especially disturbing terms. Looper’s October 25 recap describes the scene as graphic and questions whether it goes too far. That is a critic’s response rather than a universal measure of how viewers will react, but it is a fair warning: the episode’s title may sound gentle; its crime material is not.
Why Cook’s role feels earned
She initiates the opportunity
Cook does not wait for Intelligence to notice her in the background. She brings the case forward, putting her own judgment into play and giving the unit a reason to work with her. The premise’s partner disagreement adds friction, but the episode’s key shift comes from what Cook does with the investigation.
#1 Best Overall
Her instincts show through the work
The hour gives Cook room to contribute as an investigator rather than relying only on dialogue about her potential. That distinction matters in a promotion story: the audience sees her engage with a case, while Torres’s response follows from observing her performance. TVLine quotes Sigan saying the episode is “a lot more psychological, and it shows us more of who she is and how she will do her job if she were upstairs with us.” Sigan also calls Cook “very resilient” and says Voight believes “she has a good gut.” Those are the showrunner’s descriptions, reported by TVLine, and the episode gives them context through Cook’s conduct.
The unit’s response changes her trajectory
Torres recognizes Cook’s work and suggests she join Intelligence. The move is not simply a reward handed down from above; it follows the case the episode has let her help lead. TVLine reports that Cook becomes a full-time member of the team, confirming the transition beyond the suggestion made on screen.
What Cook’s transfer says about her setback
The episode also gives Cook’s career change a history. TVLine reports that she says her sergeant demoted her to patrol after she challenged how he managed the tactical team. That detail turns the transfer into more than a clean promotion beat: she arrives at a new opportunity after a workplace conflict, rather than because the show has erased the cost of speaking up.
Her earlier setback and the new opening are not presented as proof that the conflict itself was simple or inconsequential. Instead, the episode lets Cook’s ability to do the job become the practical bridge between patrol and Intelligence. The result is a satisfying character progression: she has to make her case through the investigation, and Torres’s recommendation gives that effort an institutional consequence.

The rainstorm and the murder investigation give the hour a dark, pressured atmosphere, but the graphic body discovery is its most divisive element. Looper’s recap focuses on the waterboarding with honey and asks whether the sequence’s impact justifies its extremity. For this review, the stronger point is that the shock does not do the work of developing Cook: her agency in bringing forward and advancing the investigation does that. The violence may intensify the case, but it is not what makes her promotion feel earned.

That balance is why “Water and Honey” works best as a Cook showcase, not merely as a gruesome-case episode. The case gives her a consequential test; her decisions give the hour its character focus. Viewers who find graphic crime scenes difficult may find the case material overwhelms that achievement at moments, but the episode’s career turn remains legible.

As a critical assessment, yes. The episode gives Cook sustained involvement in a case, ties her investigative work to Torres’s recommendation, and connects her new place in Intelligence to the professional conflict that preceded it. Rotten Tomatoes displayed four critic reviews when consulted, including a CBR review scored 8/10 that called it “the great episode she deserved,” a Tell-Tale TV excerpt describing it as the episode in which she officially joins the team, and a Fangirlish review calling it strong for Torres and Cook. Those are individual critics’ views, not evidence of a universal consensus. Rotten Tomatoes lists the excerpts.
The hour’s achievement is specific: it makes Cook’s move feel like a consequence of what she can do, not just a promise about what she might do later. That focus, more than the case’s most shocking moments, is what makes the episode matter for her.
