The emotional detail in David Eigenberg’s recent comments concerns Jesse Spencer’s departure from Chicago Fire in Season 10, not a new exit in Season 14. Eigenberg described a private cast farewell in which the group hugged Spencer and then fell back on an informal game they had played since the show’s first season: kicking an empty water bottle through each other’s legs. The moment was never shown on air.
Eigenberg’s account was published by TV Insider on September 18, 2025, in an interview tied to the One Chicago Podcast ahead of Season 14.
The timeline, kept separate
The headline’s “exit” refers to a single event, and the new details come from a later recollection. The events below are easy to conflate, so they are listed in order.
| When | What happened | Source for the detail |
|---|---|---|
| First season | Cast members begin a water-bottle game during long outdoor workdays, playing in short bursts. | Eigenberg, as reported by TV Insider |
| Season 10 | Jesse Spencer leaves Chicago Fire as a series regular. The cast gathers for a group hug, and the game is played again during the farewell. None of it appears in the episode. | Eigenberg, as reported by TV Insider |
| After Season 10 | Spencer returns to the show as a guest star multiple times. | TV Insider |
| September 18, 2025 | Eigenberg describes the farewell ritual in an interview tied to the One Chicago Podcast. | TV Insider, Meredith Jacobs |
| Season 14 | The season that the September 2025 interview was promoting. It is not the season of Spencer’s exit. | TV Insider |
The farewell ritual
Eigenberg’s description of the game is the core of the story. He said that during long outdoor workdays, cast members would link arms and play a quick round with a water bottle. In his words:

“We put out arms around each other, like three or four of us, and then we started kicking it and trying to get it through each other’s legs, and we call it water bottle ball or something. It’s stupid. We only play for about 30 seconds or a minute and a half. It goes through a couple times.”
How the game came back at Spencer’s farewell
At Spencer’s farewell, the cast went out to give him a group hug. A bottle ended up among them, and they began kicking it around, repeating the game they had played for years. Eigenberg’s estimate of how long a round lasted, about 30 seconds to a minute and a half, is his own recollection and is not a measured figure.

Why it resonated for Eigenberg
Eigenberg framed the moment as personal rather than theatrical. His description of it was: “We loved it, and it was like little tears and stuff like that.” The emotion he recalled was in the shared, silly ritual and the goodbye it was attached to, not in any formal ceremony.
Why viewers never saw it
The farewell did not make the broadcast episode. Eigenberg’s explanation was blunt: “It didn’t belong in the show.” He presented the game as a behind-the-scenes cast ritual, not a scene that was filmed for the series, and he did not describe it as a formal farewell. Anyone looking for the moment in Spencer’s last episodes will not find it.

Keep Spencer’s exit separate from the Herrmann storyline
Eigenberg’s September 19, 2025 interview with TV Insider covered a different character arc, and it is easy to merge the two. That report concerned Christopher Herrmann, not Spencer.
Herrmann’s Season 13 choice
By the end of Season 13, Herrmann said he did not want the battalion chief job and stepped back from being an officer. That left a lieutenant position for Mouch. Eigenberg said he liked that Herrmann was not automatically following the expected path of advancement, and he added: “I like seeing that sometimes it’s not always about the ascension and making it home. It’s not always about getting the golden goose. Sometimes it’s about just getting on with it.”

The competing pressures
TV Insider also quoted showrunner Andrea Newman describing the pressures on the character. Boden had identified Herrmann as the successor. Mouch had returned from injury energized to resume active work. Herrmann had not stopped to ask himself whether he wanted the promotion. These comments belong to the September 19 report and have nothing to do with Spencer’s departure.
