Spoilers for “Ride the Blade.” Chicago Fire’s Season 13, Episode 2, “Ride the Blade,” makes its most compelling move a test of trust inside Firehouse 51: Damon disobeys Stella Kidd on a call, then asks his half-brother Kelly Severide to keep it from her. Severide’s choice to protect Damon at first—and later tell Kidd the truth—gives this hour its clearest dramatic spine. The episode aired October 2, 2024, on NBC; its official listing identifies it as the season’s second episode (NBC; Rotten Tomatoes).

Why the Damon, Kidd and Severide conflict works

Damon’s insubordination is not merely a friction point between a rookie and a lieutenant. It puts several relationships under pressure at once: Kidd’s authority as the officer responsible for the crew, Severide’s bond with his half-brother, and the trust that makes either relationship workable. Damon’s decision to bypass Kidd and appeal to Severide turns a call into a test of whether family loyalty can coexist with the chain of command.

Miranda Rae Mayo, who plays Kidd, explained the stakes in a TVLine interview ahead of the episode: “People’s lives are on the line, and there’s a reason why there’s a chain of command.” That is Mayo’s account of Kidd’s perspective, not a separate safety assessment. It clarifies why Kidd cannot treat Damon’s choice as a private family misunderstanding: on the job, a direct order carries consequences beyond hurt feelings (TVLine, October 1, 2024).

Severide’s initial instinct to shield Damon is understandable, especially given his wish to mentor a younger brother who was neglected by their father, Benny. But sympathy does not make the cover-up a good leadership decision. Cruz’s concern prompts Severide to reconsider; he admits he was wrong, tells Kidd what happened, and arranges a conversation with Damon. The turn gives the episode a satisfying resolution to its central dilemma without pretending that honesty erases the damage. It also makes Severide’s growth more interesting than a simple choice between brother and colleague: he has to recognize that mentoring Damon includes holding him accountable.

#1 Best Overall

Mayo described Severide as feeling “between a rock and a hard place” because being a mentor to Damon matters to him. That tension is the episode’s strongest emotional material, and it gives the title’s “bewildering” quality a human source: the characters are not confused about what the rules are so much as pulled in opposing directions by the people they care about (TVLine).

Does Chief Pascal’s slow reveal build intrigue?

Chief Dom Pascal’s return to Chicago supplies a second, less resolved source of tension. He comes across as a micromanager, wanting to listen to calls and track where the rigs are. The episode also offers hints of trouble in his marriage, but those signs do not establish an affair. In Ashley Bissette Sumerel’s Tell-Tale TV review, the possibility remains a suspicion rather than a confirmed revelation; the episode is still withholding the context needed to judge what is happening at home (Tell-Tale TV, October 3, 2024).

That restraint leaves Pascal in an uncertain middle ground. A new chief needs more than a managerial quirk to feel like a character, and the developing backstory suggests the series intends to give him more dimension. Yet the episode’s hints raise questions without giving much new information to hold onto. That can create anticipation, but it also risks making the slow reveal feel like a delay rather than progress. “Ride the Blade” makes Pascal worth watching; it does not yet settle whether his personal story will deepen the command conflict or sit beside it.

Do the subplots add range or crowd the hour?

Violet and Novak

Violet is still hurt by Carver, who has been spending late nights drinking with a woman from his past. Novak tries to draw Violet back toward dating, bringing a lighter, more playful energy to a thread that could otherwise stay fixed on disappointment. Sumerel highlights the appeal of Violet and Novak’s dynamic, and it gives the episode some welcome tonal contrast. The trade-off is that the developing relationship material competes for attention in an hour already carrying Damon’s workplace breach and Pascal’s unanswered personal questions.

Herrmann and Cindy

Herrmann’s search for the perfect scent to spice things up with Cindy provides the episode’s most openly comic domestic beat. The official synopsis singles it out alongside Damon’s disobedience, an unusually clear sign of how many registers the episode is trying to balance (Rotten Tomatoes). The lightness helps keep the hour from becoming uniformly tense, but this smaller story does not connect as tightly to the central leadership question as the other plots.

The result is an episode with plenty of activity and a few vivid character pairings, but not every thread carries equal weight. The Novak–Violet scenes add warmth; Herrmann’s romantic mission adds levity; Pascal’s backstory adds mystery. Together they make Firehouse 51 feel lived-in, though they also explain why some viewers may find the hour overstuffed, especially when several relationship stories are competing for space.

What critics mean by “bewildering”

“The most bewildering episode for Firehouse 51” was TV Fanatic critic Haley Whitmire White’s phrasing, displayed in Rotten Tomatoes’ listing—not a formal description of the plot. Other critics pointed to different strengths and limits: CBR’s Brittany Frederick called the episode good but not spectacular and saw it as setting up the season, while Tell-Tale TV’s Sumerel praised its intense calls and in-house drama and gave it 4.5/5 in the displayed listing. Lady Geeks Media’s blurbs noted both Novak’s efforts to help Violet and the sense that the hour sometimes takes on too much. These are individual critical reactions, not a single consensus verdict (Rotten Tomatoes).

Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 80% Tomatometer from five critic reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026. That is a dated snapshot of a small set of critic reviews, not an audience score or a permanent rating. It is best read alongside the actual divide in the responses: the episode’s character drama and season setup earn praise, while its crowded mix of romantic and workplace plots can blunt its momentum.

Verdict: a strong central dilemma in a crowded episode

“Ride the Blade” is most effective when it keeps its focus on the consequences of Damon’s choice and Severide’s eventual decision to be honest with Kidd. That conflict gives the episode a meaningful question about loyalty and leadership, and it earns its resolution through a change in Severide’s judgment rather than a quick dismissal of the problem. Pascal’s uncertain backstory creates a promising hook, while Violet, Novak and Herrmann bring texture and tonal variety. The cost is a busy hour whose secondary stories do not all have room to develop. The central drama lands; the surrounding plots make the episode feel fuller—and, at times, more bewildering—than it needs to be.
