The track is a duet recording of Papa Roach’s song, with Underwood joining the band. It was announced under the expanded title “Leave A Light On (Talk Away The Dark).” The announcement connected the recording to AFSP’s Talk Away the Dark campaign, which encourages people to talk about suicide prevention and support one another. The artists said royalties from the song would go to AFSP in perpetuity; the announcement did not specify a donation amount.

AFSP CEO Bob Gebbia welcomed the collaboration, saying the song’s message was that people go through difficult times and can be there for one another. He described the duet as a way to reach more fans and connect them with the campaign; this was AFSP’s response to the release, not an independent study of its impact.
When was it released?
Papa Roach’s announcement on Carrie Underwood’s official site was published July 31, 2024, and said the duet was scheduled to arrive August 2, 2024. The word “new” in the original announcement referred to that 2024 release, not a new announcement in 2026. Did they perform it together live?
Yes. Papa Roach and Underwood performed the song together live for the first time at the band’s Las Vegas show on April 5, 2025, according to an official announcement the following day. This was a later live performance, distinct from the 2024 studio duet.
What does the Gold certification mean?
In a September 10, 2025 notice, Underwood’s official site reported that the duet had recently been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The notice stated that Gold represents 500,000 units sold in the United States, attributing that threshold to the RIAA. This is the certification report as of that dated notice, not a fresh check of the track’s status in 2026. The same notice mentioned an exclusive live performance for World Suicide Prevention Day.

Where the campaign connection fits
The collaboration’s stated purpose extended beyond pairing artists from different musical backgrounds: it was presented as part of AFSP’s Talk Away the Dark campaign. The royalty commitment and campaign connection are documented in the 2024 announcement, but no donation total or independent measure of the duet’s effect on awareness or mental health has been established.
