The Season 12 finale promoted Boden to Deputy Commissioner, and Walker later returned in Season 13 as a guest.
Who left Chicago Fire?
Eamonn Walker, who played Wallace Boden, exited the show’s regular cast after 12 seasons. The change was to Walker’s cast status, not an abrupt end to Boden’s place in the story. TheWrap reported the departure on May 7, 2024, as did TVLine.

Why did Eamonn Walker leave?
TheWrap reported that the decision came from Walker, citing an individual familiar with production. Its report and a later casting story attributed the information to an unnamed source; Walker did not give a direct public explanation for stepping away from regular duties in those departure reports. It is therefore more accurate to describe the choice as reported than to assign him a motive. TheWrap’s initial report and its July 2024 Season 13 casting report provide that sourcing.
Was Boden killed off?
No. In May 2024, TheWrap reported that Boden would not be killed off and was expected to return. TVLine said he could appear in a recurring capacity and reported that Walker would be back for the Season 12 finale. Those were expectations at the time; subsequent episodes confirmed that Boden remained part of the series.

How Season 12 ended for Boden
In “Never Say Goodbye,” the Season 12 finale, Boden returned and became Deputy Commissioner, as TVLine reported. His promotion moved him out of the Firehouse 51 chief role while keeping the character alive in the show’s world. TVLine’s finale report describes the outcome.
Who became chief at Firehouse 51?
Dermot Mulroney joined Season 13 as Chief Dom Pascal, the station’s new fire chief. TheWrap announced the casting on July 25, 2024, and reported that Walker was expected to appear in future episodes. Pascal’s arrival was the immediate leadership change following Boden’s move to Deputy Commissioner. Read TheWrap’s casting report.
Did Eamonn Walker return to Chicago Fire?
Yes. Walker returned as Deputy Commissioner Boden in Season 13’s “Post-Mortem,” which aired April 16, 2025, according to a TV Insider preview published April 10. In that interview, Walker said, “If they write it, I will come.” The appearance confirms that leaving the regular cast did not mean he had permanently left the series. TV Insider’s interview and episode preview documents his return.
What Walker said after filming his final Season 12 scene
After filming his final scene as a regular cast member in Season 12, Walker thanked the people behind the show: “I just want to say: Best cast. Best crew. Best production. Best job of my life. Thank you,” TVLine reported, quoting an Instagram video shared by NBC and Wolf Entertainment. TVLine’s report includes the message.
