How did Naroditsky shape chess beyond competition?
FIDE describes Naroditsky as a teacher at the Charlotte Chess Center and a commentator for prominent events, particularly on Chess.com. His Twitch and YouTube channels reached a broad audience. The Associated Press likewise reported that he livestreamed games and explained chess to viewers. He also wrote a column for Chess Life from 2014 to 2020.
That mix of elite play and clear instruction was central to his public work: he could discuss chess as a competitor while helping viewers understand the decisions unfolding on the board. FIDE reproduces a line Naroditsky gave The New York Times in 2022: “At the end of the game, both the king and the pawn go into the same box.”

Naroditsky faced cheating allegations from former world champion Vladimir Kramnik. In an October 28, 2025 statement, FIDE’s Ethics & Disciplinary Commission acknowledged petitions concerning alleged bullying and unfounded cheating claims. Commission chairwoman Yolander Persaud said it would act once a formal complaint was before it, with due process. Her statement described allegations and a procedural next step; it was not a final adjudication. It also does not establish any connection between the allegations and Naroditsky’s death.
