The cheapest way to livestream saved gaming replays on YouTube is to use a computer you already own and a free software encoder such as OBS Studio. Start with a private test before buying a capture card, encoder, or other gear: the computer, connection, and settings determine whether the setup can handle the replay reliably.
What you need for the lowest-cost setup
- A replay video file stored on the computer that will run the stream.
- A computer capable of playing the file and encoding a live stream at your chosen settings. OBS’s baseline requirements do not guarantee that a particular computer can stream adequately; resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity all matter. OBS System Requirements
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate.
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube’s general minimum age for livestreaming is 16. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders; its guidance says expensive equipment is not required to get started. For a replay file already on the streaming computer, a capture card is not a default requirement. It becomes relevant to some workflows where the source is an external console. Set up and test a replay in OBS
- Check the channel first. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and complete any required live-streaming enablement. Allow up to 24 hours if this is the channel’s first time going live.
- Create the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Choose the encoder workflow, then copy the stream key into the matching stream settings in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or publish it, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Configure OBS to use the replay file. Add the saved video as a source in the scene and confirm that its audio is included. OBS controls vary by release and operating system; verify the chosen source and any looping behavior in your installed version rather than assuming it repeats automatically.
- Begin with a conservative video target. For 720p at 30 frames per second, YouTube recommends a 2 Mbps video bitrate. Set the encoder to CBR, use H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS, and set a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every replay or connection will perform well. YouTube encoder settings
- Run a private or unlisted test. Include representative fast motion and audio, check the preview in Live Control Room, and monitor stream health. Confirm that both picture and sound are present before sharing the broadcast publicly.
- Start the public stream only after the test works. Watch stream health during the broadcast so you can respond if YouTube reports a problem.
YouTube’s cited encoder guidance establishes the encoder workflow, but it does not specify a universal OBS media-source loop configuration. If you need continuous playback, test the replay’s end-of-file behavior in your OBS version during a private stream.
Check upload capacity before going live
The stream’s total bitrate must fit your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom, so do not plan to use all the upload capacity shown by a speed test. Run a test on the connection you will actually use, then check stream health during a private or unlisted rehearsal. A speed-test result is a snapshot; reliability also matters. If Wi-Fi proves unstable, trying Ethernet is a reasonable low-cost troubleshooting step, not a YouTube requirement. There is no specific cable category established here as necessary.
When should you buy extra hardware?
Buy only after a real test identifies what is failing. OBS notes that meeting its listed system requirements does not ensure acceptable streaming or recording performance. A modern hardware encoder available in your existing GPU or integrated graphics may reduce CPU workload, but that is a reason to test what you already have before considering a purchase. - Replay file on the streaming computer: test that computer with OBS first; a capture card is not the default need.
- Replay coming from a separate console: a capture card may fit that source workflow, but it is not necessary for every setup.
- Encoding overload or dropped frames: test a lower resolution or frame rate and check whether an available hardware encoder helps before replacing equipment.
- Unstable upload: troubleshoot the connection and leave bitrate headroom before buying streaming hardware.
- Replay-only show: a webcam and microphone are optional unless you want camera footage or live commentary.
Check game footage and music rights
Owning a game does not automatically establish permission to rebroadcast or monetize its footage or music. YouTube says monetization depends on commercial-use rights granted by the game publisher; extended gameplay footage without appropriate permissions may not be accepted for monetization. Instructional commentary tied to the live action can be relevant, but it does not settle the rights question for a particular game.
