On March 31, 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said ChatGPT had added one million users in the previous hour. The claim followed a viral wave of AI images resembling Studio Ghibli’s animation aesthetic. The timing strongly suggests that the image trend helped drive an exceptional burst of sign-ups, but OpenAI did not publish enough methodology to prove that exactly one million new, active people joined because of Ghibli-like images.
What happened
OpenAI announced GPT-4o image generation in ChatGPT on March 25, 2025. The feature could create images from detailed prompts, transform uploaded pictures, render text more accurately, and continue editing through a conversation. Within days, users began posting portraits, pets, memes and family photographs transformed into imagery perceived as resembling Studio Ghibli’s visual language.
On March 31, OpenAI expanded image generation to free users, and Altman posted that ChatGPT had “added one million users in the last hour.” He compared that pace with ChatGPT’s original launch, which he said took five days to reach one million users. Those statements are attributed to Altman, not independently audited measurements. Contemporaneous coverage reproducing Altman’s post and a timeline roundup preserve the comparison.

What “one million users” does—and does not—mean
Altman said ChatGPT had “added” one million users. OpenAI did not publicly specify whether that meant newly registered accounts, verified accounts, unique visitors, active users, or another internal category. It also did not state whether the count covered a particular clock hour or a rolling hour, which countries were included, or how duplicate, abandoned, automated and unverified accounts were handled.
The figure therefore should not be rewritten as “one million active new users,” “one million people generated Ghibli images,” or “one million daily active users.” Existing account holders returning to try image generation could be treated differently from newly registered users, and the post does not resolve that distinction. The defensible wording is: Altman said ChatGPT added one million users in an hour, and OpenAI did not publish the counting methodology.
What the “Ghibli effect” means
“Ghibli effect” is shorthand for the rapid spread of images generated in, or perceived as resembling, the aesthetic associated with Studio Ghibli. It was not an official OpenAI product name and did not describe a dedicated Studio Ghibli filter.
- Official capability: GPT-4o image generation inside ChatGPT.
- Viral use case: Users asked for photos, pets, scenes and memes to be transformed into Ghibli-like animation.
- Cultural phenomenon: People shared results and copied the format with their own material.
- Business effect: More sign-ups, image-generation requests and pressure on OpenAI’s computing capacity.
OpenAI’s launch description focused on general image generation, not training or tuning the system specifically on Studio Ghibli works. The available evidence does not establish such training. OpenAI’s product announcement describes the underlying features.
Why the images spread so quickly
No published OpenAI causal study isolates one reason for the surge. The following factors are reasonable inferences from the product design and the observed sharing pattern, not independently measured contributions.

Low creative friction
A user could upload an image and describe a transformation in ordinary language. There was no need to learn a separate editor, install a model or construct a complex workflow.
Personal relevance
Faces, families, pets, homes and personal memories made the output more emotionally compelling than an abstract demonstration image. People had an immediate reason to share the result.

A Ghibli-like visual cue was legible at a glance. Viewers could understand the joke or transformation while scrolling, which made the images effective social-media objects.
Imitation and network effects
Each posted image acted as a demonstration and an invitation: other users could repeat the same prompt pattern with their own photographs. Existing ChatGPT familiarity reduced the cost of trying it.
Free-tier distribution
When image generation reached free users on March 31, a major adoption barrier disappeared. Free did not mean unlimited: OpenAI’s current Free Tier FAQ says image creation has separate usage limits that can change over time.

Improved model behavior
OpenAI promoted stronger instruction following, text rendering, image transformation, multi-turn editing, contextual understanding and the ability to specify details such as aspect ratio, colors and transparent backgrounds. OpenAI warned that a generation could take up to about one minute because of the additional detail and capability.

What was technically new in GPT-4o image generation?
The feature was integrated into a conversational assistant rather than offered only as a standalone art tool. Users could refine an image over multiple turns, upload an existing picture, request edits and preserve contextual instructions. OpenAI also claimed better handling of numerous objects and relationships, plus both photorealistic and stylized output. These capabilities made experimentation and iteration accessible to people who were already using ChatGPT for text.
That integration matters for distribution. A user did not have to discover a new brand or understand a separate model marketplace; the image tool appeared inside a service with a large, established audience.
The compute bill behind the meme
Image generation generally requires substantially more processing than a short text exchange. A viral image format can therefore produce a sudden concentration of expensive inference requests, especially when users regenerate results, make several edits or upload high-resolution inputs.
Reports that OpenAI delayed or staggered access, together with Altman’s “GPUs are melting” remark, indicate operational pressure. They do not establish a specific data-center failure, GPU count, queue length, outage duration or financial loss. “GPUs are melting” should be read as colorful shorthand, not a published capacity statistic.

The episode illustrates a basic generative-AI economics problem: a feature can be free at the point of use while imposing real compute and moderation costs on its provider. OpenAI’s April 2025 API announcement listed approximate per-image costs for square images of $0.02 at low quality, $0.07 at medium quality and $0.19 at high quality. Those were the prices presented in that announcement, not a universal estimate of every ChatGPT request or a guarantee of current pricing.

At launch, OpenAI listed image generation for Free, Plus, Pro and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu access coming later. Availability and limits can change by plan, geography and date. The current Free Tier FAQ confirms that free users can create images subject to limits, while paid tiers provide higher access relative to Free. Check the official pricing page before relying on any current plan name, price or entitlement.
- Occasional experimentation: A free ChatGPT account is the simplest starting point, but expect rate limits.
- Higher personal usage: Paid ChatGPT plans may provide higher limits and broader model access; exact entitlements are volatile.
- Production software: The OpenAI platform is more suitable when a developer needs authentication, monitoring, moderation and cost controls.
- Design and layout workflows: Adobe Firefly and Express (Firefly, Express) and Canva AI/Magic Studio (Canva AI) offer editing, templates or asset-management features that ChatGPT is not primarily designed to provide.
Neither a ChatGPT subscription nor an integration announcement should be treated as blanket commercial clearance for every generated image or for imitating a particular studio.
Copyright, consent and labeling
The legal questions are fact-specific and jurisdiction-dependent. Asking for an image with a broad aesthetic resemblance is not the same question as reproducing a copyrighted character, logo, frame or recognizable composition.
- Style versus expression: General style imitation and copying protected expressive elements raise different legal issues.
- Other rights: Trademark, publicity, privacy and consent concerns can apply even where a copyright claim is uncertain.
- Uploaded people: A photograph may include individuals who did not agree to its transformation or publication.
- Publisher responsibility: Clearly label AI-generated or AI-edited images and retain the original when provenance matters.
OpenAI’s image-generation system-card addendum discusses image-transformation risks and safeguards, but it does not settle every copyright or consent question. Users seeking commercial publication should obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice rather than infer permission from the existence of a working prompt.

Did the growth last?
The first-week report of 130 million image creators and 700 million images shows that activity extended well beyond the claimed hour. It still cannot answer how many people returned after the novelty faded, continued creating images, upgraded to paid plans, used ChatGPT for non-image work or moved to dedicated image products.
That distinction is central to interpreting viral product metrics:
- Registrations are not the same as active users.
- Active use is not the same as retention.
- Retention is not the same as paid conversion.
- Paid conversion is not the same as profitability.
What the episode reveals about AI growth
The Ghibli trend shows how a visually immediate, emotionally resonant feature can function as a distribution engine for a broader AI product. Bundling image generation into a familiar chatbot lowered discovery and learning costs. Social sharing supplied demonstrations that OpenAI did not have to buy through conventional advertising.
It does not prove that people prefer AI art to writing, coding, research, voice or other assistant functions. Nor does it prove that the surge permanently changed ChatGPT’s user base. The strongest lesson is narrower: viral novelty can accelerate acquisition, while the harder business questions—retention, capacity, conversion and profitable usage—require metrics that the public claims did not provide.
Bottom line
The “Ghibli effect” was real as a viral adoption event, and it coincided with Altman’s claim that ChatGPT added one million users in an hour. But that number remains an attributed, insufficiently defined company metric—not an independently audited count of one million new active people, and not proof that Ghibli-like images alone caused the surge. The episode combined an unusually shareable use case, free-tier distribution and substantial inference demand, making it a revealing case study in how AI products turn a meme into growth.
