Charlotte Flair was named to ESPN The Magazine’s 2018 BODY Issue, the edition marking the feature’s tenth anniversary. ESPN launched its digital presentation on June 25, 2018, and scheduled the print issue for newsstands on June 29.

When Charlotte Flair appeared in the BODY Issue

ESPN The Magazine announced its 2018 BODY Issue roster on June 19, naming Flair among 16 athletes in the tenth-anniversary edition, known as BODY10. WWE had announced her inclusion the day before. ESPN’s digital presentation launched June 25, with photographs, video and interviews; the print issue was scheduled to reach newsstands June 29. ESPN’s June 19 roster announcement, ESPN’s June 25 launch announcement and WWE’s June 18 announcement document the timing.

What Flair said about wrestling and her identity as an athlete

In ESPN’s June 25 interview, Flair said she had not expected to become a wrestler. She grew up playing volleyball and doing gymnastics, then became interested in wrestling after attending an event with her father, Ric Flair. She spoke about wanting to honor his legacy while building a path of her own.

Flair also pushed back on the idea that appearance defines her work in WWE: “I am all athlete, and that’s important that my looks have nothing to do with what I do in the WWE.” In the same interview, she described wrestling training as largely mental and said bumps and accidental injuries take a toll. Those are her reflections from 2018, not a general medical assessment. Read Flair’s ESPN interview.
