Netflix announced the casting on Oct. 15, 2024; the season has since been released, and all eight episodes are available to stream on Netflix.
Who plays Ed Gein in the new season of Monster?
Charlie Hunnam portrays Gein. The 2024 announcement also named Laurie Metcalf as Augusta Gein, alongside Tom Hollander and Olivia Williams. Ryan Murphy, the series’ co-creator, said choosing Hunnam was “the easiest ‘yes’ I think, I’ve ever gotten in my career,” according to Netflix Tudum.

Netflix’s later cast guide lists additional performers: Suzanna Son, Vicky Krieps, Joey Pollari, Tyler Jacob Moore, Charlie Hall, Will Brill, Mimi Kennedy, Robin Weigert, Lesley Manville, and Addison Rae. The initial casting announcement and the released season’s fuller cast list reflect different stages of the production’s publicity.
Is Monster: The Ed Gein Story already out?
Yes. Netflix identifies Monster: The Ed Gein Story as the anthology’s third installment and lists all eight episodes as available to stream on Netflix. The season’s 2024 casting announcement called it the next installment at that point; that wording is now historical. Netflix’s season page has the current release and episode information.
#1 Best Overall
What is the season about, and how should viewers read its true-story claims?
Netflix describes the season as inspired by the real Ed Gein and locates his activity in Plainfield, Wisconsin, from 1947 to 1957. Its synopsis frames the case as an influence on horror films including Psycho, The Silence of the Lambs, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. These are Netflix’s descriptions of the series and its premise, not independent verification of every historical detail or of the precise influence on each film.
As with a dramatized true-crime series, its scenes, dialogue, and character portrayals should be understood as storytelling unless corroborated by separate historical sources. Netflix’s cast guide explains the show’s framing and characters.

The franchise has also drawn substantial viewership: Netflix said the original Dahmer installment reached 1 billion viewing hours in its first 60 days. That figure refers to the first season, not the Ed Gein season.
