The “extra Targaryen” in the 2024 casting report is Daeron Targaryen, played by Henry Ashton. He is one of seven actors announced for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight. The characters converge on the Ashford Meadow tournament, where hedge knight Duncan the Tall’s conflict with Prince Aerion leads to a trial by combat.
Who are the seven newly cast actors?
James Whitbrook reported the additions for Gizmodo on August 8, 2024. HBO’s later official cast announcement also lists all seven actors and their roles.
| Actor | Role | Connection to the story |
|---|---|---|
| Edward Ashley | Steffon Fossoway | One of two Fossoway brothers who take different sides in Duncan’s trial by combat. |
| Shaun Thomas | Raymun Fossoway | Steffon’s brother; the two are on opposing sides in the trial. |
| Daniel Monks | Ser Manfred Dondarrion | Declines Duncan’s requests for help. |
| Henry Ashton | Daeron Targaryen | A Targaryen who supports Prince Aerion. |
| Youssef Kerkour | Steely Pate | A character connected to Ashford and Duncan’s story. |
| Tom Vaughan-Lawlor | Plummer | A character connected to Ashford and Duncan’s story. |
| Danny Webb | Ser Arlan of Pennytree | The knight Duncan served before his death. |
HBO’s official season-one cast list includes the seven roles alongside the rest of the ensemble: HBO’s October 9, 2025 announcement. The original casting report appeared in Gizmodo.
How the knights fit the Ashford tournament
The Hedge Knight follows Duncan, commonly called Dunk, after Ser Arlan of Pennytree dies. Duncan sets out to compete at the Ashford Meadow tournament, carrying the legacy of the knight he served without the standing or resources of a great lord.

He is accompanied by Egg, a young squire whose hidden identity is Prince Aegon V Targaryen. The tournament’s disputes become more dangerous when Duncan clashes with Prince Aerion Targaryen. The resulting trial by combat brings the new cast’s characters into the story’s central conflict: Daeron backs Aerion, while the Fossoway brothers end up on different sides. Manfred does not provide the assistance Duncan seeks.
Pate, Plummer and Ser Arlan connect the Ashford setting and Duncan’s past. These casting details establish their roles in the story’s world, but do not by themselves indicate how much screen time each character receives.

What is the series, and where can you watch it?
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts Martin’s Dunk and Egg story The Hedge Knight, a tale centered on the unlikely pair Duncan the Tall and Egg. Peter Claffey plays Duncan and Dexter Sol Ansell plays Egg. HBO describes the series as “an endearing tale centered on the adventures of an unexpected duo.”
The first season has six episodes. HBO says it debuted January 18, 2026, and streams on HBO Max. That current release information supersedes the August 2024 report’s expectation that the show would arrive in 2025. See HBO’s release announcement for the official details.
